  • The Ultimate Guide to the Russian Banya

    My most intense and — dare I say it — religious experience in a Banya took place in a town called Omyakon, deep in the Siberian region of Yakutia. Otherwise known as the "Pole of Cold," Omyakon is famous for recording, back in 1924, an unthinkably inhuman temperature of -71.2 °C (-96 °F). This makes it, officially and incontestably, the coldest inhabited spot on the entire planet.
