  • More Lung Cancer Cases Discovered Thanks to Computer Tomography

In the late 2010s, there was a surge in lung cancer incidence in Russia – however, there wasn’t a related rise in death rate. According to a team of researchers from ITMO headed by oncoepidemiologist Anton Barchuk, this can be explained by the spread of computer tomography for screening and diagnostics. Their study was published in Cancer Epidemiology.

  • ITMO Researchers Create Robots That Withstand Shock Loads

An ITMO PhD student has devised a way to design flexible robots capable of withstanding a shock load, retaining its energy, and adapting to movement on rough surfaces. The new robot’s joints are connected by flexible hinges rather than turning kinematic pairs. With such mechanisms, it’s possible to increase the capabilities of robots that interact with their environments: quadrupeds, anthropomorphic robots, and collaborative manipulators. The new design will be unveiled at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2024).

  • Triumph Again: Russian Students Win Four Gold Medals at International Olympiad in Informatics

At the recently concluded International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), the Russian team secured four gold medals – repeating last year’s success! Competing under the IOI flag, the team was coached by Andrey Stankevich, the Dean of ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, who also trained the teams that secured ITMO’s seven wins at ICPC. This year, IOI brought together over 350 participants from 91 countries, all assembled in Egypt’s Alexandria on September 1-8.

  • ITMO’s First Vice Rector Daria Kozlova: Big Tech Should Support Universities in Training IT Experts

Daria Kozlova, ITMO’s First Vice Rector, believes that businesses should engage in the educational process at universities, share their knowledge, and contribute resources to the training of high-profile IT specialists. That was the view she expressed at the recent Eastern Economic Forum during the discussion The Digital Transformation of Public Administration and the Data Economy: Friend or Foe?. Such specialists will also be able to engage in the new national project Data Economics and Digital Transformation of the Country that aims to create a domestic data market.

  • ITMO Physicists Develop Multifunctional Material for Thermal Melanoma Therapy

Researchers at ITMO have suggested a quick and simple method to synthesize gold plasmonic nanodiamonds – these hybrid materials can find their application in photothermal therapy of melanoma. The new material can perform two functions: heat up a tumor and measure its temperature. In vitro experiments demonstrated that once plasmonic nanodiamonds were introduced into a tumor and heated, the tumor’s growth slowed down by 65.22%. The results of the study were described in Nanophotonics.

  • Quantum Computers, Dark Matter, and New Materials: Latest from Theoretical Physics

Imagine a physicist. Is it someone in a lab, wearing a white coat and protective goggles? This might be what some physicists look like, but sometimes they only need a pen and a sheet of paper to come up with life-changing discoveries. This is the domain of theoretical physicists: the results of their research often lay the groundwork for break-through technologies. Why is theoretical physics no less exciting than experimental one? What are its current hot topics – and what are the challenges? Read on for answers from participants of the ISCTP 2024 conference on theoretical physics.
