  • Science Fest: Future is Here

    Science Fest, a grandiose celebration of science, has yet again been hosted in St. Petersburg. Held on September 22-23, the event spread over ten unique spaces in the city: the usual Planetarium and Lumiere Hall were joined by the museums of optics, cosmonautics, and railway transport, the Lenpoligraphmash creative space, the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, and the landmark Annenkirche church. The extensive program reflected the festival’s key message: science is a valued contributor to all aspects of our life.

  • Geography for All: Why Science Popularization Matters

    “Geography for All”, an international summer school hosted by the Russian Geographical Society, has just wrapped up at ITMO University. This year, the event was dedicated to popularization of geography. Over the course of a week, students from all over Russia and the CIS countries attended a whirlwind of lectures and workshops of renowned bloggers, science communicators, globetrotters, and public figures, who shared their tips and tricks for making science buzz. The summer school is the first milestone of cooperation between ITMO University’s Science Communication and Outreach Office and the Russian Geographical Society aimed at popularization of geography. This partnership gives ITMO’s Master’s students access to an expert community of leading geographers, which will be invaluable for developing new science communication tools.

  • Profilaktika.Media - Russia’s First Media Project on Cancer

    At the beginning of this year, Master’s students and graduates of ITMO’s Science Communication program launched Profilaktika.Media, an educational media project from the Cancer Prevention Foundation. Before the year ends, they plan to launch a column “A guide to cancer types”, as well as publish instructions for oncology patients facing complex situations. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, the project’s editor Polina Poleschuk and author Lizaveta Babitskaya talked about writing about oncology for a wider audience, trust issues in medicine, and why one shouldn’t believe everything they find on such resources as PubMed.

  • Think Critically: ITMO University Student Creates Popular Science Podcast

    Aleksandr Golovin, ITMO’s Master’s student in science communication, has created his own popular science podcast “Crytmysh”. Every week, he invites scientists and science popularizers to discuss different issues: is it OK to trust Wikipedia, what’s the deal with modern flat earth societies, was the Stanford experiment real and even how to choose wine. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Aleksandr about his podcast, new formats for popularizing science, pseudoscience and why science communicators should not become too conceited.

  • Physics Is No Longer To Explain The World, Rather Predict Its Future

    ITMO University has become one of the sites for film screenings of the Contemporary Science Film Festival, which is traditionally held in several Russian cities in late autumn. ITMO has run the film "Into The Universe with Stephen Hawking. Lucky Imperfection", which tells about the physical aspects of time travel. Alexandr Chirtsov, Professor of Physics at ITMO, provided his commentary on the film. ITMO.NEWS interviewed Professor Chirtsov and got to know why classical physics gives only one of the possible approximate interpretations of the world, why the world does not always completely follow the formulated laws of physics and why theoretical physicists  are constantly trying to come up with the right equations, providing the right solutions, while experimental physicists are looking for ways to refute them.
