  • ITMO’s Andrey Filchenkov: How To Train Neural Networks To Identify Debtors Based on Their Expenses

    Researchers at ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty created a model that can tell responsible loaners from those who don’t pay back their bank loans by the spending pattern. The algorithm can also serve as the basis for a system that would notify credit card users about their risky behaviour. ITMO.NEWS asked Andrey Filchenkov, associate professor at ITMO, head of the Machine Learning Lab, and one of the authors of the project, how the algorithm works, if it is possible for it to make a mistake, how ethical it is to use it, and, most importantly, why people keep viewing neural networks apprehensively despite their obvious successes.

  • Researchers Highlight Inbreeding Among Amur Leopards Through Whole Genome Sequencing

    The genomes of 26 African and Asian leopards, including Amur leopards, were analyzed as part of research. As a result, the scientists uncovered surprising differences between the African and Asian groups of subspecies and noted a high level of inbreeding among leopards living in the Russian Far East, which might threaten the long-term existence of this subspecies. The research paper was published in Current Biology.

  • SEWAN 2021 International Conference: How Pandemic Affects Energy Industry and Vaccine Storage Management

    ITMO University has held the third International Scientific Conference on Sustainable and Efficient Use of Energy, Water and Natural Resources SEWAN 2021, where the university acted as the organizer together with Tomsk Polytechnic University. At the conference, researchers discussed when the global fuel and power complex will return to pre-COVID metrics, how to maintain the temperature conditions for vaccine storage, and how to make houses more efficient.

  • ITMO Student Daria Fedorova On Winning Pyaterochka’s Student Ideas Contest

    Daria Fedorova, a Bachelor’s student at ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations, was named one of the winners of the NEXT5 contest organized by Pyaterochka retail company. Together with her friend, Daria suggested a modification to the company’s corporate application that would allow potential employees to experience a sneak preview of their job in a virtual simulator, while current retail and storage facility workers would accumulate points to be counted towards their promotion or a salary raise. We reached out to Daria to ask her why she decided to apply, how long it took her to develop the concept, and why she thinks it useful to take part in such events.

  • ITMO’s Faculty of Physics Announces Scholarship Competition for Prospective Master’s Students

    The competition is open to Bachelor’s students from around the world wishing to pursue their Master’s degree at ITMO’s Faculty of Physics. During their first semester, winners will receive a stipend of 5,000-15,000 rubles per month in addition to the state scholarship. The competition will be held in several waves, with the soonest one taking place on May 14-15.
