Telemedicine in Russia: How IT Technologies Help Improve the Healthcare System
According to Watson Health, a subdivision of IBM, the amount of data generated by each patient throughout his life exceeds 1000 terabytes. Yet, how can we store this data, effectively manage it as part of a common medical system, and what's most important, is the Russian healthcare system ready for a countrywide introduction of information technologies? The Federal Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre has a medical information system that makes use of an experimental decision support system developed by ITMO University, and the country’s Federal Telemedicine Center has the opportunities to provide remote consultations to more than 5,000 patients a year, as well as training to medical specialists all over Russia. During a recent tour of the Almazov North-West Medical Research Centre, ITMO's Master's students learned about the modern medical information systems (MIS), the prospects of their applications, and the software that medical specialists will need in the future. ITMO.NEWS shares about the novelties of one of Russia's most advanced medical research centers.

ITMO Scientists Help Link Alzheimer’s to Lack of Energy in Immune Cells
An international scientific team that includes scientists from ITMO University has discovered why a mutation or lack of TREM2 protein in the nervous system of immune cells increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It turns out that in these cases, immune cells cease to receive nourishment and begin to “digest” themselves. The research was published in Cell journal.

Rusnano Head Chubais: Five New Nanotech Clusters in Russia by 2027
In the next ten years the Russian nanoindustry will be expanded with five new technological clusters. These are: windpower, solid-waste recycling, flexible electronics, industrial energy storage and nanomodified material. They will join the six clusters that have already been established in Russia since 2007. Anatoly Chubais, head of “Rusnano”, spoke about this at an open lecture in ITMO University. During the talk he analyzed the development of the Russian nanoindustry over the last ten years and gave his forecast on the industry for the upcoming 10 years.

Silicon Nanoparticles for Nanosurgery: Master’s Student Publishes an Article in Nano Letters
Using nanoparticles for medical purposes is a promising method which remains sought-after for over 10 years. One of the most important breakthroughs in this field is optical heating of nanoparticles fixed on tumor cells. Using this method one can damage diseased cells with localized heating. To control the temperature without damaging living tissues researchers use golden particles. However, the current control methods are complicated and take lots of time. ITMO Master’s student Georgy Zograf tries to solve this problem using silicon nanoparticles. He became the first author of article devoted to the results of this study, which was published in Nano Letters.
