• Not Just NFTs: Experts Discuss New Applications for Blockchain

  How much do you know about blockchain? For most people, the word is strongly associated with cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin. However, this technology has long expanded beyond the world of digital finance and is now actively being used in both business and education. At the Not Just NFTs meetup on May 4, experts spoke about how blockchain can help us study, transport priceless museum exhibits, and even extract oil.

• Results of Latest Demo Day at ITMO Accelerator

  Experts from NRW.Global Business Russia, the trade and investment agency of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia were invited to this meeting. They discussed the possibilities of placing Russian companies on the European market. Green economy, sustainable development, and international cooperation between Russian and German businesses were key topics of the event.

• ITMO University, Gazprom Neft, and Innopolis University Organize Online Hackathon Blockchain.Hack

  Participants will tackle a range of practical tasks suggested by the partners, all centered around the subject of blockchain technologies. The top teams will receive monetary prizes as well as the chance to continue their collaboration with Gazprom Neft and Innopolis University. Applications are accepted until November 30. The event will take place in Russian, but is open for non-Russian citizens.

• ITMO Roboticists Developing a Financially Independent Robot Artist

  A team of PhD students from ITMO University’s Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics are developing a fully autonomous robot artist. The project aims to demonstrate the possibility of creating autonomous systems using the principles of robonomics. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with developers Ivan Berman, Alexei Ovcharov, and Vadim Manaenko to learn about their project, the ethics of robot-human interaction, and their collaboration with the MIT Media Lab.

• “We Got Noticed by Intel and IBM”: How an ITMO Technopark Resident is Winning Over the American Robotics Market

  Founded by ITMO University and Boston University College of Engineering professors, The MerkleBot company has headquarters in Silicon Valley and a developer office in St. Petersburg. Recently, the startup was awarded in the Robotics category at DeveloperWeek, the world’s biggest developer conference. After that, it was noticed by major companies. Vitaly Bulatov, CEO at MerkleBot, gave a lecture on business management in the USA at ITMO University during his short visit to Russia, and ITMO.NEWS took the opportunity to ask Vitaly several questions about the startup.

• Researchers Suggest Using Blockchain to Boost Self-Driving Cars’ Security

  Scientists from ITMO’s Faculty of Secure Information Technologies have suggested applying blockchain technology to monitoring road traffic. Their algorithm will make it possible for driverless cars to create unalterable activity logs to document any road accident they detect. The accidents will be kept in databases to identify potential “black spots”. The project was showcased at the International Conference on Information Networking 2020 (ICOIN 2020) in Barcelona and is published in the SCOPUS-indexed proceedings of the Conference.
