ITMO University Researchers Create a Terahertz Holographic Spectrometer During Self-Isolation
The pandemic and self-isolation have ruined plans of many scientists: the conferences are postponed, the publishing of articles is delayed, and many projects are frozen. However, research activities are taking place. For example, ITMO University scientists have created a terahertz holographic spectrometer that they need for studying vortex beams of electromagnetic radiation at home. This research is a part of developing new efficient technologies for wireless data transmission. ITMO.NEWS asked the creators of the device how they managed to make it during self-isolation.

The Experiment: A Week Without Coffee
Hello, we are Anastasias, and we are coffee addicts. We love coffee for so many reasons: the rich taste, the delicious aroma of roasted beans, the feeling of excitement and euphoria caffeine evokes in us, and just the ritual of taking a rest from your daily routine and sitting down with a cup of latte. However, though reinvigorating and delicious, coffee has its fair share of drawbacks, as it increases anxiety, reduces sleep and causes energy spikes and crashes. So we decided to do the unspeakable: attempt to give up coffee for a week. Will we make it out alive? Let’s find out!

Social Anthropology Expedition: the Secret Lives of Physiologists
A group of lecturers and PhD students from the Higher School of Economics (HSE), along with a researcher from ITMO University’s Science Communication Master’s program went on an unconventional sociological expedition called “Koltushi. Into Pavlov’s scientific world.” The researchers spent two weeks observing the way employees at Pavlov Institute of Physiology work and interact with each other. Read on to learn more on how to tell physiologists and doctors apart, why physiologists give each other lemons on New Year, and why the lives of scientists should be studied.

Cats Can Love
American scientists from the Oregon State University studied cats’ attachment to their owners. Some time before, the specialists had already come to the conclusion that dogs and small children have similar attachment to their close ones, but cats’ behavior is quite different: they are more independent. The article’s authors conducted an experiment to tell whether cats can love as strongly as kids or dogs.

ITMO University’s UniFEL Center Staff to Conduct New Research at European XFEL
European XFEL is a research facility housing the world’s most powerful X-ray free-electron laser, which allows scientists to observe chemical reactions, decipher the structure of complex biological objects, and solve other topical tasks. In 2018, ITMO University scientists for the first time gained full independent access to the facility’s equipment and carried out research on a new class of materials. This fall, they will use the facility to work with the ultrafast demagnetization effect to consequently apply it in high-speed magnetic storage devices.
