  • Topological Polariton-Based Structure: Scientists Get One Step Closer to Next-Gen Optoelectronic Devices

Researchers from ITMO University, the University of Sheffield, and the City College of New York have proposed a metasurface with unique topological properties. The proposed system is based on a photonic topological insulator integrated with a two-dimensional semiconductor and stimulates polaritons – quasiparticles that combine the properties of topological photons and excitons. The discovery opens the door to more efficient light control and hence advanced transmission and processing of optical information. The related article is published in Nature Communications.

  • ITMO PhD Student Dmitry Zhirihin Receives Prestigious IEEE Graduate Fellowship

Dmitry Zhirihin, a PhD student at ITMO University has received the Graduate Fellowship of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. This prestigious award is annually granted to only 12 young scientists working in the field of microwave physics. The committee evaluated Dmitry’s research of topological insulators, deciding to fund his further work. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Dmitry to learn about the work of a contemporary experimental scientist, the experiences of spending the Christmas holidays in the lab and the damage an unlocked door can do to the results of an experiment.

  • Scientists Develop World’s First Photonic Quadrupolar Topological Insulator

An international team of scientists from Russia and the USA that includes researchers from ITMO University presented the world’s first photonic quadrupolar topological insulator. As opposed to the existing two-dimensional topological insulators, these new structures have only recently started to be researched. In the future, this research can open the way to the creation of new reliable traditional and quantum-optical devices with a higher-order topological defense, as well as topologically protected sources of classical and quantum light. The research was conducted with support from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and published in Nature Photonics.

  • Lasers&Photonics Congress: Quantum Dots and Topological Insulators

The 18th Lasers&Photonics Congress has just kicked off in St. Petersburg; it includes several conferences, schools for young scientists and students, and an exhibition on laser and optoelectronic technologies. The main topics of the congress are: research into quantum dots and their practical application in lasers, a new concept of lasers based on topological insulators, as well as the possibilities offered by the European X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), experiments on which began last autumn. These topics were discussed during the plenary presentations by the event’s main speakers. The congress is organized by ITMO University together with its partners.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Topological Defect Detection Method

An international scientific team has developed a new method of probing topological structures and their topological phase transitions. The method is based on examining the reflection spectrum of EM-waves reflecting off an object from different impact angles. The accuracy of the method’s results has been verified experimentally in both IR and microwave spectra. Results were published in Nature Communications.

  • International Team Proposes New 3D Topological Insulator Design

Research in the field of topological insulators is most promising, as it has a wide range of applications. An international research team that includes scientists from ITMO University has recently described the physics of 3D topological insulators in an article published in the Nature Photonics journal. In such systems, photons start to behave as electrons, thus acquiring unique properties. Such systems have great potential for practical application in development of optical chips, stable multichannel communication systems and other optical electronic systems.
