This year’s admissions at universities have long been completed and yesterday’s schoolchildren have already officially become students and are getting used to their new status. Meanwhile, on October 30, 2019, the results of the annual “Quality of Admission to Universities 2019” ranking were published by the Higher School of Economics and Yandex with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media. The ranking is aimed at assessing the quality of the admission campaigns for full-time Bachelor’s and specialty programs at Russian universities.
The results of this year’s ITMO.STARS – a competition for prospective students with unique accomplishments – are in, with 15 participants being awarded free tuition at ITMO University’s program of their choice and the number of application doubling from last year’s. Launched in 2018, the initiative aims to offer talented and motivated high schoolers an opportunity to enroll at ITMO even if their Unified State Exam scores wouldn’t normally allow them to.
Now is the right time to learn how to create your own business, believes Anton Gopka, investor, co-founder of ATEM Capital and dean of ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations. But in order to launch a really successful company, one needs systemic knowledge. Such competencies are taught at ITMO’s “Innovative Entrepreneurship” Master’s program. Its students can launch their independent projects under the guidance of mentors — successful entrepreneurs and representatives of the industry, as well as use their startups for their thesis defense. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Anton Gopka expanded on the opportunities offered by the program as well as the competencies that one has to get today in order to be sought-after tomorrow.

Last year, 162 students joined ITMO’s Master’s programs via a portfolio contest. ITMO.NEWS talked to some of them about their experience, the application process and whatever advice they can offer to this year’s participants.
Apart from taking entrance exams, there are other ways to join a Master’s program at ITMO University. For one, you can get a tuition-free position by winning the report contest of the annual Congress of Young Scientists. The winners of this year’s event are already known. ITMO.NEWS talked to them about their projects, as well as the educational programs they chose to follow.
ITMO University’s Master’s program in Science Communication has recently launched a new track in science communication in the field of biotechnology and medicine. Students joining the program this year will be able to choose a separate track within the program, which will give them an opportunity to work with databases in medicine and healthcare, as well as learn more about the structure of medical organizations. The program’s graduates will be able to work as medical journalists and science communicators, PR specialists in major biotechnological companies, clinics, and medical organizations both in Russia and abroad.
Last year, ITMO University and the JetBrains company launched the “Software Engineering” corporate Master’s program. Apart from completing traditional practical assignments, its students also get to work on projects under the guidance of JetBrains’ developers and representatives of its partner companies in order to present their results at the end of each semester. We’ve asked some of them about working with leading developers from major companies, as well as the advantages of following a corporate Master’s program.
This year marks the third time when ITMO University together with the Russian online social media service VK organizes the ITMO VK competition for school children. The main perk of the contest is that the victory will earn you ten extra points to your total Unified State Exam score. The registration is open until March 10.
