ITMO and ASCON Develop Mockup to Automate Large-Scale Production

ITMO Team Wins Best Project in Competition by 1C Company
Ilya Livshitz, a professor at the Faculty of Secure Information Technologies, and PhD student Egor Sokolov have won the competition for the best project in the field of management and bookkeeping automation held by the software developer 1C. Their method for digital workflow of legal documents was named the best in Central and Eastern Europe.

ITMO Launches New Corporate Master’s Track in Battery Production
ITMO University and Istochnik, a Russian-based battery manufacturer, partnered up to open a new corporate track that will let students delve deep into the processes of battery production, tackle associated research and engineering problems together with practicing specialists, and acquire hands-on experience. The new track will be part of the Master’s program Digital Technologies in Manufacturing.

By chance, he also entered the world of science and education – thanks to meeting a professor on a train and arguing with the dissertation council. Now Ilya Livshits is a professor at ITMO and last year, he won the ITMO.EduStars contest. He shared some insights into various approaches to teaching and the nature of engineering with ITMO.NEWS.

ITMO Students Develop New Manipulator Arm That Can Be Applied Everywhere: From Catering to Chemistry Labs
ITMO University students developed a compact manipulator arm using polymers, which helped significantly bring down its production costs. At the same time, the new device is just as secure and precise as its existing analogs. The project is headed by Islam Bzhikhatlov, a PhD student at ITMO University, who told ITMO.NEWS about the robot’s potential applications, the tasks it can solve, and the way it stands out from similar products.

ITMO University Shines at TechCrunch International Robotics Conference
In December 2017, ITMO University started to collaborate with the British company TRA Robotics. Since then, they have been working on several joint projects in the field of robotics. In the middle of May, Berkeley, United States, hosted one of the world's most prestigious conferences in the field of robotics, TechCrunch Sessions: Robotics 2018. ITMO University and TRA Robotics presented their joint projects, a prototype of versatile industrial grasping device “UHVAT”, and an algorithm of sensorless force/torque regulation for robotic arms.

Electronic Checklists for ITMO Graduating Students
On May 14, ITMO University launches a new system of electronic checklists for graduating students. This means that students won’t have to waste any more time in lines with a paper form. The information about unfulfilled requirements can now be found in the “My Page -> Education” section at isu.ifmo.ru. The project was initiated by Special Projects Center and the Department of Information Technologies. Ekaterina Kalkina, the project manager, told ITMO.NEWS about all the important steps to be taken to graduate as planned.

Results of European Parliament Discussion on Robot Economy
The European Parliament has recently hosted a workshop on the topic “Economy of Robots”. Although a complete integration of robots and AI into humanity’s everyday life is expected to come in a few generations, the process has already begun. Experts outlined the issues that may arise in the meantime. Among the workshop’s participants were Aleksandr Kapitonov, a research assistant at ITMO’s Department of Computer Science and Control Systems, and Sergei Lonshakov, an ITMO alumnus and founder of Airalab.
