Scientists from ITMO University and Almazov National Medical Research Centre have put forward a new way for diagnosing diabetes. Researchers around the world are working on ways to transfer data in the terahertz (THz) range, which would make it possible to send and receive information much faster than what is allowed by today’s technology. But the issue they’re facing is that it is much more difficult to encode data in the THz range than in the GHz range, which is currently used by 5G tech. A group of scientists from ITMO University have demonstrated the possibility of modifying terahertz pulses in order to use them for data transmission. In December 2019, Paris hosted the Smart NanoMaterials (SNAIA2019) international conference, which brought together specialists in the field of nanophotonics, optoelectronics, quantum calculations and others. Supporting the conference was ITMO University, which organized a symposium chaired by Olga Smolyanskaya, an associate professor at the Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information and head of the Laboratory of Femtomedicine. The staff of ITMO University’s International Laboratory of Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies have recently published an article in a prestigious journal Scientific Reports. Their work explores the advantages of the Z-scan method with pulsed terahertz radiation. Based on the results of their research, the scientists proposed a set of recommendations for future studies of nonlinear properties of terahertz radiation. Researchers from ITMO University have, for the first time in history, managed to directly measure the nonlinear refractive index of matter in the terahertz range. The results of their experiments were compared with previously existing theoretical predictions in order to confirm the presence of nonlinear effects. The obtained data can be used to control light, as well as in fundamental and biomedical research. The results have been published in Optics Express.

A research team from ITMO University and the University of Rochester (the USA) have conducted a study on the formation of terahertz radiation in liquids. Previously, the generation of such radiation in a liquid medium was considered impossible due to high absorption. However, in their new research, the scientists described this phenomenon’s physical nature and demonstrated that liquid radiation sources can be equally effective to traditional ones. The results have been published in Applied Physics Letters.
