The Russian Science Foundation has been supporting fundamental and applied research, promising research projects, and young researchers since 2013. The foundation has recently announced the results of its three grant competitions for young scientists held in 2025 – the winning projects will be supported through 2026-2028. In these competitions, ITMO projects have won 28 grants for over 390 million rubles.
Independent research grants give young scientists a chance to conduct small-scale independent studies with an annual funding of up to 1.5 million rubles. Six teams from ITMO have secured these grants for projects focusing on machine learning and data analysis, as well as developing nanomaterials for high-resolution sensors and next-gen nanophotonics.
Another competition is held specifically for small teams of young scientists. 18 ITMO projects have won grants, each of which will amount to 3-6 million rubles annually. Among them are studies in photonics, nanophotonics and metamaterials, new materials, as well as AI, mathematical modelling, and quantum physics.
Apart from new projects, the RSC has prolonged four grants for ongoing projects at ITMO, with each of them set to receive 3-6 million rubles annually. These projects will carry on their work in nanophotonics, quantum optics, and nanostructures.
In total, the RSC has supported 867 projects led by young scientists all over the country. Among them, 414 are independent research projects, 348 – projects led by young researchers, and 105 continuing research projects.
