James Benning retrospective: Allensworth (2022)

The independent American filmmaker James Benning is known for his minimalist approach, which also shines in this film – an exploration of the first municipality in California to be self-governed by African Americans. Twelve static shots provide glimpses of the now-abandoned town, as the director looks for traces of the community’s cultural history. The screening is part of the Amfest Festival.

However, it hasn’t always been that way: running in public was seen as suspicious, women weren’t allowed to run marathons, and all kinds of questions were raised about the running community. Learn the inspiring – and legendary – true story of this sport’s rise to the glory it knows today with Free to Run (2015), a documentary screened as part of the Beat Weekend Film Festival.
