Where to look
First things first, do some networking – ask your classmates, friends or people in related internet communities if they know someone who could help you. In Russia, this is called сарафанное радио (word-of-mouth marketing; literally translates as “sundress radio”) – when someone offers a top-notch service, their clients tend to recommend them to others. That’s why looking for a personal recommendation is one of the best ways to go.
But don’t worry if you aren’t able to get one – there are many websites you can turn to. The list includes services like Profi and Yandex Uslugi, where you can look for various specialists, including tutors, the specialized website Association of Tutors, and Avito, which is good for everything.
Another way to go is looking for a study buddy via this VK community. There, you might find not only someone to teach you but also someone to exchange your skills with.
How to choose & work
First things first, determine your needs more specifically. Do you only need a little guidance with your studies or do you want to explore complex topics? What is your ultimate goal? Think about it and discuss your needs (and wants) with potential tutors beforehand to find out if they have the right set of skills and experience for you.
If possible, take test classes. Many tutors offer a first lesson for free or with a discount so that you can see if the chemistry is right.
Consider setting short-term goals instead of hiring a tutor for an indefinite period of time – this will make it easier for both of you to plan ahead and navigate your learning process.
It’s also important to be honest with your tutor. Say, if you don’t feel like doing certain types of homework. Don’t hesitate to express your concerns, ask questions, and tell them about your likes and dislikes. There’s a good chance that in this case, they will adapt to your needs (or at least explain why they insist on doing things in a particular way – maybe there’s a good reason).
The cost
On average, a 1-hour-long private class will cost you around 500–1,000 rubles. However, this is a very rough estimate because the price depends on a variety of factors, and a tutor’s rates can be both lower or much higher.
