If you’ve been craving some unusual contemporary art, then be sure to check out CYFEST, one of the largest Eastern European festivals that’s been bringing modern art trends to the public for 13 years already. This year, ITMO’s AIR space was chosen as the fest’s main location and the exhibition there features works by both acclaimed international artists and students and graduates of ITMO’s Art & Science Master’s program. Fan of the avantgarde? Then you must’ve heard of Aleksander Rodchenko, who together with Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich, founded the first museum of contemporary, mostly avant garde art in Moscow in the 1920s. Though he started with painting first and then turned to design, Rodchenko discovered photography as a professional artist with a certain feeling for composition. His artistic path can be traced in the photos making the exhibition, where he experiments with light and shadow and chooses unusual angles and shapes. As an added bonus, Dom Radio has only recently been opened after renovation and the labyrinthine gallery halls with a rich history are definitely worth checking out. Don’t forget to buy your ticket in advance and set off on an avant garde journey through time.

Exhibition: Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe: Tales About the Lost Time

Another peculiar exhibition in this weekend guide, this one presents the works of Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe, a contemporary Russian artist, one of whose specialties is performance art. Just look at his impersonation of Marylin Monroe above to get the level of his incredible skill. He has also participated in quite a few Russian contemporary art projects, for instance, at the start of his career he collaborated with Sergey Kuryokhin. At the exhibition, you will get the chance to see works from different periods of his career, including graphics, photographs, and collages. It’s a great chance to get a closer look at what is happening on the Russian art scene now – and not through the works of millennial artists or graffitists, like it was at exhibitions held earlier this year.
