On this year’s list of the world’s most frequently cited researchers, there are only five Russian scientists – and one of them is Anton Korobeynikov, a bioinformatics expert from ITMO University. How does one achieve this status and how does the scientist himself feel about this high honor? ITMO NEWS spoke with him to find out.

In photonics, a harmonic generation is the “narrowing” of a laser beam after it has passed through a linear crystal. Reduce its wavelength by three times and you get third harmonic generation – a highly useful, but tough-to-produce phenomenon that offers a lot of benefits in medical and biophotonics research. Now, though, it’s about to become more accessible, as a new harmonic generation source developed by researchers at ITMO combines unprecedented efficiency with a compact size.

Now that AI is firmly a part of the virtual realm, it’s beginning to make its way into tangible reality. Physical AI Garage, a joint initiative by ITMO and Yandex, will soon be available as a Master’s track for students of the 2026/2027 academic year. Its students will work on intelligent robots and other autonomous systems for science and industry. The curriculum will involve plenty of hands-on learning, both at the university and at the company’s high-tech facilities.

The Fantastic Robby Brown is back! ITMO’s award-winning robot is continuing his streak, this time with a best-in-show title from the creative section of RoboCup Asia Pacific 2025 in Abu Dhabi. Developed by the team of ITMO’s Youth Robotics Lab, the robot has been making headlines for over a year – and chances are, this isn’t the last we’ve heard of him.
