Sometimes, the best inventions are ones that make life just a little bit easier. Take, for instance, the newest achievement of the researchers at ITMO’s Faculty of Physics: they’ve devised an AA battery that is compatible with Qi-type wireless chargers. In practice, this technology should allow users to wirelessly charge all sorts of compact everyday devices, from microphones and computer mice to toys and string lights. With a functional prototype ready, the scientists will now focus on optimizing their product before it’s ready to hit the shelves.

Electronic crystals, which are one of the coolest-sounding concepts in materials science, are actually frameworks of static electrons that exist in a sort of “Mexican standoff” with each other. These occur within complex substances that are crucial to the development of advanced materials and quantum electronics and, if studied, can tell scientists a lot about the properties of new materials.
Whereas such studies are usually conducted through electrical measurements, researchers at ITMO, MIPT, and the Russian Quantum Center have discovered a way to do the same with the help of light. The resulting method reduces nearly all contact with the material and is thus more convenient and resource-efficient.

Aiming high with your education goals? In that case, few options are as fitting as the opportunity to work with space tech. Students of Russia’s first Master’s program on ground-to-space communications systems, launching this year at ITMO, will get to learn from real aerospace experts on how to connect terrestrial networks with orbiting satellites. The educational track, dubbed Wireless Algorithms, will involve specialists from the university’s industrial partner Bureau 1440, a developer and operator of low-orbit communications systems.

A newly reworked Master’s program at ITMO will train students to plan, coordinate, and implement AI integration for businesses of every kind. Fittingly, the curriculum will be equally split between learning about machine learning and team management, along with programming languages and research skills.
