M86
- Where: Moskovsky Pr. 86
This branch of the Mayakovsky Library may not have the largest selection of books, but it earns the title of the most tech-savvy library. There are plenty of computers to work on, including iMacs, and even a voice recording studio where you can make your own podcast. You can access the space and its services even without a library card.
The design is worth mentioning, too – rather futuristic with a cozy second floor to do your work in silence while people-watching.

Leo Tolstoy Library
- Where: 6th Liniya of V.O. 17
Newly open after a major renovation, this is one of the most modern library spaces on Vasilyevsky Island. From the outside, it’s a historic building, but on the inside there’s a contemporary interior with a cozy and easy-to-navigate layout. But there’s much more to it than books: the library organizes guided tours around the island, as well as hosts lectures, workshops, and speaking clubs.
The spot is conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the Vasileostrovskaya metro station, right in the heart of the island. Once you’re done with work or studies, you can head out to explore the area’s sights and gastronomic delights.
SHKAF Library
- Where: Marshal Tuhachevsky St. 31B
More than just a library, Shkaf is also an art residence that provides resources for and hosts exhibitions of contemporary art, literature, and architecture. If you come here to study, you’ll have several options: settle in at the common area on the first floor or book one of the themed rooms, from a transformer room to a “lazybones” room with hanging chairs and bean bags. Located far from the city center, it’s best suited for those living in ITMO’s Belorusskaya dorm.

Planetary 1 Library
- Where: Obvodny Canal Emb. 74B
Near Lumiere Hall, a former gasholder-turned-art center, you’ll find a lesser-known library with a wide selection of popular science books on IT, urban planning, engineering, and architecture (in Russian). But it’s not just about the books – it’s also a lovely place to hide with your notes or a laptop. With only 10 seats, it offers a peaceful atmosphere, views of the Obvodny Canal, and unlimited filter coffee.
START Library
- Where: Elizavetinskaya St. 8/1
How about studying in a cozy wooden house? Tucked away among the detached houses of Shuvalovo-Ozerki, START Library is a lovely spot for a fall study session. From the outside, it might look like a countryside library, but step inside and you’ll find a modern space. The library also hosts music nights, workshops, and board game evenings.
