ITMO Scientists and Colleagues in China, Singapore Devise “Green” Way To Extract Lithium From Used Batteries
Researchers from Russia, Singapore, and China have created a membrane that can pull lithium out of used batteries with an efficiency of up to 98%. Until now, there hasn’t been an eco-friendly way to recover lithium, even though it’s one of the most important metals for green energy. The new technology helps reduce environmental pollution and is already being put to use at a plant in Singapore. The results of the study have been published in ACS Nano.

ITMO PhD Students Train Algorithms To Count Cells in Microalgae Images With Computer Vision
Researchers from ITMO University have developed a new method for automated assessment of microalgae cell concentration in a solution based on microscope images. Unlike other popular neural networks, this method uses classic computer vision algorithms and doesn’t require training data. The new solution can be launched on a standard PC and can determine cell concentration in a sample in 30 seconds instead of the usual 30 minutes, with accuracy equal to manual calculation. This algorithm will facilitate environmental studies and improve their accuracy.
