  • Move by Nature: New Exhibition by ITMO and Gazprombank Opens in St. Petersburg

    A part of the Creative Laboratories project by Gazprombank, FC Zenit, and the Gonzo:Research&Art studio, the exhibition Move by Nature will take place on September 23-26. At the event, organized by ITMO’s Art & Science Center, visitors will explore the connections between art, ecology, and contemporary technologies through sculptures, as well as audiovisual and interactive installations.

  • Natural Waste to Slow Down Climate Change: ITMO Fellow Randa Ghonim on Cleaning Oil Spills With Green Technologies

    Oil spills produce billions’ worth of damage every year, as well as irredeemably damage marine ecosystems. The existing methods used to clean up oil spills are expensive, ineffective, and sometimes produce harmful byproducts for the environment. Randa Ghonim, a researcher at the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications (SRTA-City), Egypt, believes that biodegradable natural waste could be used effectively to clean up oil spills.   • ITMO to Host Eco Art Festival and Upcycled Fashion Show

    The OTHERsiders festival, which will take place at ITMO’s Lomonosova campus on October 15, will feature examples of organic and recycled art created by Russian artists, as well as a fashion show that will present outfits made from recycled old clothes found at the university dorms.   • Over the Hills: ITMO Students Complete Two-Week Trek of the Russian Far East

    The summer is a great time to not only rest, but also acquire new knowledge and gain some unforgettable experiences. This was definitely the case for a group of students from ITMO’s Faculty of Ecotechnology who went on an expedition into the Bastak Nature Reserve. Using a variety of methods – GIS, drone survey, and more – they assessed the state of the reserve’s bodies of water, soil, and flora. Read on to learn about the diverse nature of the Russian Far East, the region’s low hills, the meadows, and the swamps – as well as the expedition team’s findings.

    How can computers help prevent poisoning from organophosphorus compounds, such as agricultural pesticides? Vlada Petrova, a fourth-year student at ITMO’s Faculty of Energy and Ecotechnology, does research at the intersection of quantum chemistry and ecology.   • ITMO.EduStars Winner Irina Timofeeva on Making Ecology Interesting

    Irina Timofeeva decided to become an ecologist in her school days. Her childhood fascination with the subject led her to receive a Specialist’s degree from St. Petersburg State University and a Master’s at ITMO University. Today, she’s a PhD student at ITMO and teaches students of the university about sustainable development and conscious consumption. Irina is also the co-author of an upcoming book on animals driven to extinction by humans. Last year, she was named as one of the university’s top lecturers according to the ITMO.EduStars contest and received an award for achievements in education. We spoke to Ms. Timofeeva about making ecology exciting to students, the “sixth extinction,” and why we should be preserving what we have instead of bringing back extinct species.
