ITMO PhD Student Diego Arbildo Receives Best Foreign Professor Award
Diego Arbildo, a PhD student at ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations, has recently received the Best Foreign Professor Award at Jilin International Studies University, China. This award marks professionals who develop and implement innovative teaching methods. At 27, Diego has been to 6 countries and given lectures at major universities in Russia, South America, the Middle East, and Asia. In this interview, we asked him how to become a Professor and gain international experience as a Master’s student and what differences there are between students in China and their Russian counterparts.

ITMO Students Secure 5.8 Million Rubles at International AI Challenge
ITMO students reigned supreme at the international AI Challenge competition. Breaking last year’s record, winners and runners-up from ITMO secured certificates for a total of 5.8 million rubles. Within the contest, 10,000 students of schools and universities from 75 countries battled each other for a prize fund of 15.6 million rubles.

ITMO Scientist Elected 2026 Optica Fellow
Andrey Bogdanov, a researcher at ITMO’s International Research and Educational Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials and the Harbin Engineering University (China), has joined the 2026 cohort of Fellows selected by Optica – the world’s leading scientific society in optics and photonics. As an Optica Fellow, the researcher will now be eligible to influence the photonics agenda, participate in the community’s strategic initiatives, and attract new partners, PhD students, and researchers to ITMO University.

ITMO’s New AI Assistant for Physicists Makes Theoretical Calculations and Material Selection Simple
Developed at ITMO, AI-Materials Project is an AI assistant that significantly facilitates and speeds up calculations of material properties based on fundamental laws of physics. Complex computations no longer require deep theoretical expertise or specialized software, and the process now takes just minutes instead of a full day. With this new AI-powered tool, scientists will be able to determine a material's physical properties faster and more accurately in order to select the best option for research in laser technologies, optics, as well as thermal and microelectronics.
