• ITMO Researchers Find New Way To Measure Material Durability for Flexible Electronics

  Physicists from ITMO University suggest a new method to measure the durability of perovskite nanoparticles used to create flexible devices – including folding screens, pressure sensors, and solar cells. Instead of the standard sharp needle of the atomic force microscope that is unfit for fragile nanoparticles, the researchers suggested using a blunt probe that works as a miniature press: it compresses the crystal without destroying it. Additionally, to increase the accuracy of calculations, the team developed a 3D model of the experiment that takes into account particle surface irregularities and the probe’s angle. The study was published in Applied Physics Letters.

  ITMO University has published all orders of admission for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD studies. The interest in the university’s programs keeps growing: this year, ITMO received 1.5 times more applications to Bachelor’s programs than last year, while the number of Master’s applications increased by over 30%. This year’s admission campaign also set a new record for ITMO in the number of admitted contest winners: it was the highest in St. Petersburg and one of the best in Russia. • A Billion Times a Second: ITMO Researchers Create Silicon Film for Superfast Light Control

  Scientists from ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Institute of Photonics in collaboration with researchers from Switzerland and China have created a thin film that can switch light with the speed of up to a billion times a second. The device is essentially an adjustable silicon metasurface that can modulate radiation in the medium infrared range. In the future, it can be used in optical computing, biosensors, and next-get data transfer systems. The results of the study have been published in Nature Communications.

• ITMO Researchers Create Nanoparticles for Detecting “Mirror” Molecules and Developing Diodes

  Scientists from ITMO University have developed carbon nanoparticles that make it possible to detect “mirror” molecules in organic solvents. Such forms resemble each other, like the left and right hands, but have different properties, which is why it’s important to detect them in production of medicine and other substances. The new nanoparticles can serve as a foundation for sensors to control the quality of raw materials in production of pharmaceutics and optoelectronics. The results of the Russian Science Foundation-supported study were published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

• ITMO Scientists Create Microspherical Light Amplifiers for Medical Diagnostics

  ITMO researchers have developed resonator microparticles that emit light and amplify it by hundreds of times. Thanks to this property, they can be used in producing light-emitting medical sensors for the detection of marker molecules of various diseases in blood samples. Moreover, such structures can be used as miniature anti-fraud markings, including in microelectronics. The results of the Russian Science Foundation-supported study were published in Optics and Laser Technology.
