  • It’s Your Call! Forum Winning Projects: Fighting Burnout and Recycling Face Masks

    This year, ITMO University held the It’s Your Call! student educational forum for the fourth time. The forum is part of the I am a Professional student contest, where ITMO oversees five competitional tracks. On Saturday, May 15, the best teams presented the projects they had been developing for five days. ITMO.NEWS visited the contest’s final and talked to the forum’s winners.

  • Biologist Dmitry Zhukov on Stress, Depression, and Displacement Activities

    As part of the Mental Health Month, ITMO University arranged a lecture on stress and ways to deal with it, given by Dmitry Zhukov, a biologist, professor at the Pavlov Institute of Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, writer, laureate of the Enlightener Prize, and author of the best-selling book Стой, кто ведет? Биология поведения человека и других зверей (Stop, Who’s Leading? Biology of Human and Animal Behavior). He discussed the biological meaning of stress in humans and animals, ways of dealing with it, and how to minimize the harm it causes. ITMO.NEWS has prepared a summary of the lecture.

  • Elena Rybnikova on Why You Shouldn’t Fight Stress

    Everyone from school students to CEOs complains about stress. Stress is considered to be one of the key factors that reduce life expectancy. Does this mean that stress is our enemy? Elena Rybnikova, DSc and deputy head of scientific affairs at Pavlov Institute of Physiology RAS, gave a lecture about fighting (or helping?) stress as part of the Open Lectorium of New Holland Island and the Mental Health Month.

  • ITMO’s Andrey Filchenkov: How To Train Neural Networks To Identify Debtors Based on Their Expenses

    Researchers at ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty created a model that can tell responsible loaners from those who don’t pay back their bank loans by the spending pattern. The algorithm can also serve as the basis for a system that would notify credit card users about their risky behaviour. ITMO.NEWS asked Andrey Filchenkov, associate professor at ITMO, head of the Machine Learning Lab, and one of the authors of the project, how the algorithm works, if it is possible for it to make a mistake, how ethical it is to use it, and, most importantly, why people keep viewing neural networks apprehensively despite their obvious successes.

  • Researchers Highlight Inbreeding Among Amur Leopards Through Whole Genome Sequencing

    The genomes of 26 African and Asian leopards, including Amur leopards, were analyzed as part of research. As a result, the scientists uncovered surprising differences between the African and Asian groups of subspecies and noted a high level of inbreeding among leopards living in the Russian Far East, which might threaten the long-term existence of this subspecies. The research paper was published in Current Biology.

  • SEWAN 2021 International Conference: How Pandemic Affects Energy Industry and Vaccine Storage Management

    ITMO University has held the third International Scientific Conference on Sustainable and Efficient Use of Energy, Water and Natural Resources SEWAN 2021, where the university acted as the organizer together with Tomsk Polytechnic University. At the conference, researchers discussed when the global fuel and power complex will return to pre-COVID metrics, how to maintain the temperature conditions for vaccine storage, and how to make houses more efficient.
