  • NTI Olympiad Winner Vsevolod Kosarev: The Best Prize is Knowing Where to Go Next

    The National Technological Initiative (NTI) olympiad for high school and Bachelor’s students has been held since 2015 and is part of the national program for technological development. Among its organizers are more than 30 Russian universities, including ITMO University, Skoltech, Moscow Polytechnic University, MIPT, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, and others. This year, more than 200 university and 1,200 school students took part in the final stage, with over 50,000 applications submitted in total. Among the winners (as part of team Antares) was Vsevolod Kosarev, a first-year student at ITMO University’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Vsevolod told us about the competition, working on smart enterprise systems, and how the online format changed the team’s approach to their project.

  • ITMO University Graduates Develop a Service for Career Guidance in IT

    Profimap is an online service for career guidance in the field of IT. Among its features are tests, analysis of soft skills, recommendations on specializations and educational institutions, as well as career advice. The service was created by ITMO University students Dmitry Pokidov and Veronika Petrukhina. Now there are six people on their team, including Nail Khabibulin, also an ITMO University graduate.   • Study Abroad at Home: ITMO University Student’s Experience

    Evgenia Ponomareva, a student at the Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, and an employee at the Laboratory of Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies, was supposed to study abroad, at Aalto University (Finland) from January to May. However, due to the pandemic, she had to return to St. Petersburg in March. She continues her studies at Aalto University remotely. Evgenia tells us how she studies in Finland from Russia and continues her research from home.

  • ITMO Hosts MemoryHack: New IT Services for a Project About Veterans

    Due to the pandemic, every grand public event, including Eurovision, Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics, has been cancelled. The many online competitions, on the other hand, have grown even more popular. For instance, 113 programmers and web-developers from all over Russia took part in the MemoryHack remote hackathon. According to the event organizers, they have received five times more applications than expected. The participants had 36 hours to design new services for Memory Road, a project about the veterans of World War II. Among the winners of the contest are ITMO University students, who told us about their projects and impressions of the online hackathon.

  • ITMO University’s Work and Study Schedule from April 4 to April 30

    In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, Russian higher education institutions will continue the educational process through distance learning. Education at ITMO University will resume on Monday, April 6, and will take place completely online using distance learning technologies. From April 4 till April 30, the University will move the maximum number of staff to remote work and will also offer financial aid to students whose families experience temporary financial hardships because of the current situation. ITMO University Rector Vladimir Vasilyev signed the corresponding order on April 3, 2020.

  • ITMO University PhD student Karina Pats on Her Job in the Field of Bioinformatics in Kazakhstan and her Career in Academia

    Karina Pats graduated from ITMO University’s Applied Computer Science program last year, and at the moment is getting a PhD degree. She also works on a big project at Nazarbayev University (Kazakhstan) under the grant for research of nuclear receptor action mechanisms. Karina shared with ITMO.NEWS why research of these mechanisms can potentially help development of a new medicine, how bioinformatics work in Kazakhstan, and why she decided to pursue a career in academia instead of the industry.

  • IEEE Scholarship recipient Anna Kuzikova: Science is What Drives Self-improvement

    Anna Kuzikova, a “Terahertz Biomedicine” Laboratory employee, who is studying at ITMO University's Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technology, has won an international competition for the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships for young scientists studying radio-frequency, microwave and terahertz radiation. No more than twenty people a year receive such an award. However, this is the seventh victory of an ITMO University student in the last twenty years. The jury praised Anna for her work on the diagnosis of cancer with terahertz radiation. An ITMO.NEWS correspondent met with the honored young scientist and learned how this research can help doctors, what Anna Kuzikova is going to do after this project and why she considers competitiveness as one of the main drivers of science.

  • Students of Three European Universities Visit Russia to Study Closed-Loop Economy on the Example of St. Petersburg Companies

    CREA-RE-RU is a joint project by ITMO University, University of Gävle (Sweden), Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finland), and University of Latvia. For two years now, the project’s participants have been solving real-life business cases provided by production plants and companies by developing effective schemes for utilizing natural resources. The project is divided into four study sessions: each semester, the participants are welcomed by a different partner university. ITMO University became the final venue, hosting the international students on February 17-21.

  • Hack the Sea: Results of First Hackathon by ITMO University and Wärtsilä Digital Technologies

    The two-day Hack the Sea hackathon has recently been held at ITMO University. This is the first hackathon organized by ITMO together with the Finnish company Wärtsilä Digital Technologies, which manufactures navigation equipment for large watercraft. Over 20 students, most of them representing ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, had to develop an app for facilitating the navigation around the Finnish company’s headquarters. More on the hackathon’s results in this article.
