Art Born of Slime Moulds and Bacteria: ITMO Hosts BioArt Workshops
On February 1-23, the A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications hosted Measure of Chaos. Science as a Means of Communication, a wide-ranging Art&Science project that included workshops and lectures on this interdisciplinary field. LIFE FORMS, one of the key tracks of the project, focused on generative biology, bioethics and other disciplines within BioArt, which is among the most popular fields of Art&Science. ITMO University took part in this track by organizing a BioArt weekend. Laura Rodríguez, a specialist in the field of microbiology and a second-year Master’s student at ITMO’s Art&Science Master’s program, hosted two workshops on BioArt.

Where They're Always Glad to Help: Inside the New Student Services Office at ITMO University
The Student Services Office, which was launched at ITMO University in August 2019, has moved to a new location. The brand-new creative space now operates on the fourth floor at Lomonosova St. 9 and is ready to help students to resolve their questions about paperwork, tuition fees, accommodation and academic backlog. Plus, there is a cozy coworking space where you can discuss your projects, do your homework or just relax in between classes.

Hailing from India, Sagar Kumar is a Master’s degree student of the Big Data and Machine Learning program at ITMO University. ITMO University Goes Up 18 Positions in Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Rankings
ITMO University has been ranked among the top 40 universities in countries with emerging economies as part of the Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings-2020. The full ranking was published on February 18, 2020. The St. Petersburg-based university has strengthened its position and rose up to the 35th spot after placing 53rd last year. All in all, the latest THE ranking includes more than 400 universities.

ISS Simulation Software, Laser Breathalyser and Metal 3D Printer: A Tour of Laser Systems
This year, ITMO University hosted the third winter school “It’s Your Call!” for participants of the “I am a Professional” student competition. Sberbank served as the general partner of the school that annually brings together students from all over Russia. The school consists of workshops, lectures and tours of major companies and research institutions. Last week, the participants went to Laser Systems, a high-tech company based in Strelna. There, they discovered how lasers can help make flights safer and detect the level of someone’s alcohol intoxication and saw a 3D printer working with metal powders.

Researchers Uncover the Moscow Subway Microbiome
Brought together by an international project, scientists from all over the world study bacteria in various public spaces, such as the subway or the streets. Recently, a group of ITMO University researchers has looked into the microbiome of the Moscow Subway using the method already applied in other cities within the project. The research was published in Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the scientists to ask them about the bacterial world of the Russian capital’s subway system and how it might be similar to that of New York's public transportation.
