A Series of Workshops on ITMO Highpark’s Ecosystem Kicks Off in St. Petersburg
The workshop “New materials and technologies for the creation of comfortable territorial ecosystem of ITMO Highpark” has kicked off at the Boiling Point (Tochka Kipenia) space of the International Banking Institute in St. Petersburg. Over the course of two days, its participants will brainstorm solutions for new innovative materials and technologies for building state-of-the-art campus dormitories south of the city as part of the ITMO Highpark project. ITMO.NEWS attended the workshop’s opening to find out what tasks are the participants set with, how the work will be conducted and what innovations can be introduced into the plan of ITMO Highpark as a result.

Lift-Off Festival: Rock Bands of ITMO Students and Graduates Cross Guitars for the Prize
ITMO University’s 120th anniversary year is the time to celebrate not only its scientific and educational achievements but also the potential of its students and graduates, including in the fields of sport, creativity and music. Student of the Year Contest: Four ITMO University Students Become Laureates
On November 25, the finals of the Student of the Year contest were held in the concert hall of St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design. This year, almost 200 St. Petersburg students submitted their applications in 12 nominations. A total of 36 made into the final round, including four ITMO University students.

ITMO’s Chess Team Places Second at World InterUniversities Championships in Croatia
On November 13-17, the city of Pula (Croatia) hosted the 5th World InterUniversities Championships, which saw students compete in a wide range of sports. ITMO University was represented by two teams vying for the main prize in the tennis and chess categories. In the team event, ITMO’s chess players managed to win silver in the prestigious competition. ITMO.NEWS met the team’s members to talk about their experience and being part of the university’s chess club.

60,000 Steps a Day: ITMO Students on Organizing Mendeleev-150 Conference
What’s it like to take part in organizing a major international conference as a first-year student? How do you communicate with scientists from the world over and solve an avalanche of issues in mere hours? This July, ITMO University was home to the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table, which brought together renowned chemists, physicists, educators, and historians of chemistry from Russia, the US, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. The event’s organizing committee was comprised, in part, of students of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems, who spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their experience and their future plans.

International Competitions, Research, and Conferences: the First Year of ITMO.STARS
Last year, ITMO University launched ITMO.STARS, a program for talented prospective students with insufficient Unified State Exam scores. Instead, the applicants could prove their mettle by showcasing their self-made software, methodology, or a scientific, social, or business project. In 2018, the University enrolled 14 winners of ITMO.STARS. We spoke to some of them to learn about their first year at ITMO.

ITMO Master’s Student Yan Koval on His Internship in Denmark and Importance of Public Opinion in Lighting Design
Yan Koval, a second-year Master’s student of ITMO University’s program in Lighting Design has returned from a short-term internship at Aalborg University (Denmark). We spoke to Yan and learned about the differences in Copenhagen and St. Petersburg’s lighting cultures, the importance of public opinion in designing a lighting environment, and how Denmark is making its lighting eco-friendly.
