  • 8th Congress of Young Scientists: Genetic Algorithms, Robotic Intelligence and Struggle Against Infections

    16 years ago, ITMO hosted the first inter-university conference for young scientists. At that time, it brought together about a hundred participants, and its program featured six sections only. With time, the conference attained national recognition and the status of a congress. Last Monday it was the opening of the 8th Congress of Young Scientists, featuring 49 sections, 11 sessions of science schools and 7 school sections, as well as a report contest whose winners will get the opportunity to join ITMO’s Master’s programs without entrance examinations. This time, the event brought together over 2,500 young scientists and students from 200 educational establishments from 45 Russian cities and 10 cities of the neighboring states, as well as 200 school students and representatives of 20 enterprises.

    Last week, the St. Petersburg’s Atomic Energy Information Center hosted the 7th discussion about the latest trends in science and technology. The event brought together leading science communicators in the field of cosmonautics, chemistry and physics, including Mikhail Kurushkin, an associate professor at ITMO University ChemBio Cluster, Dmitriy Epstein, a researcher at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Pavel Piskarev, the chief designer at the Research Institute of Electrophysical Facilities and a coordinator at ITER.   • From Leucippus to Dmitri Mendeleev: History of Periodic Table

    2019 was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. The discovery of the periodic table in 1869 was a major breakthrough in the field of chemistry. Its publication laid the foundation for rapid development of this complex yet extremely interesting science, while the history of its invention is full of myths and legends. According to one of them, the scientist saw the table in a dream. In his open lecture at the Mendeleev Center, Eugeniy Kalinin, a lecturer at St. Petersburg State University, shared about the path the humanity made to discover the periodic table of chemical elements.   • Ex-Executive Director of Nobel Foundation Michael Sohlman: How to Win the Nobel Prize

    The Innovative Economics Week at ITMO University came to a close with an open lecture and discussion featuring Michael Sohlman, the ex-Executive Director of the Nobel Foundation (1992-2011), a member of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economies, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. Mr. Sohlman expressed his thoughts on what he considers the key traits for anyone aspiring to become a Nobel Laureate, and shared some curious facts about the Nobel Prize.

  • PhD Vitaly Aksenov: Coding For Someone Other Than Myself Is Boring

    Vitaly Aksenov, staff member of ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, graduated from school at the age of 15. At the age of 24, he got his PhD at a leading French university. During the past several years, Vitaly has been working in the field of concurrent computing, solving fundamental tasks that have to do with optimizing data structures. In future, he is planning to continue his research in Austria. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, the young scientist spoke about his research interests, experience, and ideas.

  • Boundless Science: Interdisciplinary Meeting for ITMO Fellowship and Professorship program

    Experts from many fields around the world are coming to ITMO University to participate in the Fellowship and Professorship Program. They contribute to the university in many different ways, either as guest lecturers, or researchers in one of the university’s research centers or labs. Their participation in the program lasts from a few weeks up to three years, and most of them stay on to work at the university long term.

  • ITMO University Enters Academic Ranking of World Universities for the First Time

    ITMO University has entered the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), widely known as the Shanghai Ranking. Considered one of the most objective rankings, it takes into account the universities’ bibliometric indexes and the prevalence of prestigious awards among their graduates and staff. ITMO University entered the ranking in the 801-900 position.
