ITMO Student Picked as Torchbearer of 2019 Winter Universiade
Roman Kozlov is a student of the Master’s program Bioengineering and Biotechnical Systems, as well as the captain and manager of the University’s boxing team. This fall he was also chosen to be one of the torchbearers of the 19th International Winter Universiade. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Roman explained what it’s like to carry the torch and discussed the stereotype of less-than-athletic scientists.

Young Scientists Share Experience from Sirius School in Sochi
The Sirius Art & Science Park in Sochi has recently hosted a four-day Conference School on Photonics, Radio Physics and Nanotechnologies. More than 60 students from Russian universities attended lectures and workshops, competed in a hackathon, and visited their first “real” science conference, METANANO-2018, which brought together more than 300 experts in the field of nanophotonics and metamaterials from all over the world. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, the students shared the details of their research and gave their answers to the question of why fundamental science is relevant today and why conferences matter.

Geography for All: Why Science Popularization Matters
“Geography for All”, an international summer school hosted by the Russian Geographical Society, has just wrapped up at ITMO University. This year, the event was dedicated to popularization of geography. Over the course of a week, students from all over Russia and the CIS countries attended a whirlwind of lectures and workshops of renowned bloggers, science communicators, globetrotters, and public figures, who shared their tips and tricks for making science buzz. The summer school is the first milestone of cooperation between ITMO University’s Science Communication and Outreach Office and the Russian Geographical Society aimed at popularization of geography. This partnership gives ITMO’s Master’s students access to an expert community of leading geographers, which will be invaluable for developing new science communication tools.

Mentorship Program: Find a Mentor and Land Your Dream Job
ITMO University graduates can now take part in the Mentorship Program launched in collaboration with the Recursion charity fund and aimed at creating a platform for university graduates and students to share ideas and experience. About 250 university graduates became mentors for more than 1000 students.

MSU Student on Working in Different Laboratories and Doing Internship at ITMO
Alexander Chezhegov, a third-year student at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Faculty of Physics, took part in the “I am a Professional” competition and the “It’s Your Call!” Winter School that was held at ITMO University last winter. His project focused on creating a hydrophobic coating for solar cells. In July 2018, he did an internship at ITMO’s International Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, where he studied hybrid states of light in low-dimensional quantum materials. In his interview with ITMO.NEWS, he shared his experience of working in different research groups.

What to Expect from a Master’s Program at the Faculty of Physics and Engineering

ITMO Student Wins IEEE Undergraduate Scholarship
This year six young scientists from the USA, Canada and Russia were awarded an IEEE MTT-S Undergraduate Scholarship. Maxim Masyukov, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, was among the winners. MTT-S is the biggest international society of experts in microwave, millimeter-wave, and terahertz technologies. The society exists as part of the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and provides scholarships to students and postgraduates. Maxim’s research concerned the development of a chiral metasurface with tunable polarizing properties in THz frequency range. ITMO.NEWS asked him some questions about how to win such a scholarship.

Exchange semester in France: a Life-Changing Experience
Maria Garets, a student at the Department of Intelligent Technologies in Humanities at ITMO University, spent her winter semester at Eurecom, a graduate school and research centre in communication systems established by one of the top French universities, Telecom ParisTech. Eurecom is located at the heart of Sophia Antipolis, Europe’s largest technopark, a hotbed for internships and job opportunities. ITMO.NEWS asked Maria about her experience of studying in France.

ITMO University Hosts Potanin Foundation Competition
This year, it will be the first time for ITMO University to host the final selection for the Vladimir Potanin Scholarship Program. From January 30 till February 3, the second onsite round is taking place at ITMO’s campus; 328 students from 11 Russian universities gathered in St. Petersburg to participate in the competition.
