• ITMO University Graduate Stepan Rakitin on Making a Career in IT and Working at a Startup

  Stepan Rakitin graduated from ITMO’s Master’s program in Big Data and Machine Learning in 2018, and then spent two years working as a Java developer at the largest European startup in fintech. These days, he lives in Berlin and holds a job at an American platform for data science. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Stepan to ask him about making a career in IT, the unique features of studying at ITMO and the reasons for choosing a startup instead of a major corporation.

• Datathon on Texts Annotation: How Programmers and Humanities Specialists Analyze Texts

  This past weekend, ITMO University held the first ever datathon on texts annotation. Over 80 participants from different fields, from programming to humanities, competed to solve the tasks on the linguistic annotation of historical and culturological sources. The datathon came hand in hand with an extensive educational program presented by educators of the seminar on natural language processing organized by ITMO together with Huawei. • How the RENOIR Project Untangles the Chaos of Social Media and Why It Matters

  What can data from blogs and social networks tell us about their users? Is it possible to develop mechanisms that will allow us to identify fake information? Specialists from a dozen universities and organizations from all around the world are solving these issues as part of the RENOIR project. • How Researchers Use Big Data to Fight HIV and Addiction

  Georgiy Bobashev is a Fellow at the RTI International (USA), an independent, nonprofit research institute. Today, the institute uses Big Data analysis to study various aspects of life in the USA, primarily those concerning healthcare. Researchers work on issues related to drug addiction, medical products, the propagation of diseases such as HIV or diabetes, and other topics. Georgiy Bobashev has recently come to ITMO University for an open lecture and spoke to ITMO.NEWS about his experience with analyzing medical data, what socially significant research is being done in the USA right now, and which scientific methods give us answers to some of the most important questions.
