• Keep Off the Grass! What Are Desire Paths and What We Can Learn From Them?

  Why are desire paths a problem? What happens inside a pedestrian’s mind: why do they break the rules and why can’t paths just be designed “conveniently”? A lecture on urban development was held as part of the online Institute of Design & Urban Studies (IDUS) open days. • Smart Urban Environment: ITMO University Holds First Professional Development Course for Staff of Sevastopol State University

  Aiming to help the participants develop an understanding of the development of the smart city concept in Sevastopol, the course emerged as a result of a cooperation and partnership agreement between the two universities. • Geography of Love: ITMO’s Urban Scientists Map St. Petersburg’s Most Romantic Locations

  For St. Valentine’s Day, the specialists of ITMO’s Quality of Urban Life Laboratory (QUILLAB) have made a map of St. Petersburg’s most romantic spots.The research was conducted on the basis of a survey which involved asking the citizens to share their personal love stories and give recommendations on the best dating spots in the city.

• GIS for Beginners: How to Start Working with Maps and Why Do it in the First Place

  Recently, an open workshop “Cartography for those who’ve never done it before” was hosted in St. Petersburg. Its participants familiarized themselves with the main operation principles of the free map-making service QGIS, learned to work with existing geospatial data and display it on maps. The workshop was given by Maria Podkorytova, an engineer at the Quality of Urban Life Laboratory (QULLAB) of ITMO University’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies.

• Making Vasilievsky Island More Comfortable: Results of Workshop by European Designers

• Urban Change Week in St. Petersburg

• Computer Simulation to Make Cities Cleaner

  Egor Smirnov, a graduate student at ITMO, who is currently working at ITMO’s Institute of Design & Urban Studies has come up with an algorithm for planning path networks using dynamic behavioral modeling. The project will soon be presented at the ICCS Conference in China. Egor Smirnov told ITMO.NEWS about why pedestrian networks planning is important and what ordinary people can do to solve this problem.
