  • Sustainable Development Expert on Green Thinking and Eco-Friendly Construction

    Guy Eames is chair of the Russian Green Building Council (RUGBC) and has a master’s in climate change and sustainable development. For the last 10 years, he has been actively promoting the concept of green building in Russia. As part of the online open day of ITMO’s Laboratory of Sustainable Urban Development, Guy Eames spoke about the tools of environmentally friendly construction which are already being applied in Russia and abroad, and shared his opinion on the future of this trend.

  • Business Model Canvas Week: Students from Russia, Finland, and Germany Join Forces on Sustainable Business and Recycling

    Business Model Canvas Week at ITMO University is now over. This year, it was dedicated to sustainable business and recycling. Experts from Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) have organized an intensive program on the model for the third year in a row. The event was held as part of First+ program for Russian-Finnish educational cooperation.   • Green Campuses and Recycling: Sustainable Development by Youth International Forum at ITMO

    Last week, ITMO University hosted the Sustainable Development by Youth International Educational Forum. Organized by students of ITMO’s Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations, the forum is aimed at introducing the youth to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. At the forum’s plenary session, its participants discussed the role of universities in the promotion of the SDGs, as well as the issue of solid waste recycling in St. Petersburg.

  • ITMO University Makes a Debut in THE University Impact Rankings 2019

    The Times Higher Education ranking agency has recently announced the results of its new rankings, THE University Impact Rankings. This initiative’s goal is to capture universities’ impact on society, based on the institutions’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. ITMO University made its debut in the rankings in two categories: “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”, and “Sustainable cities and communities”, making it to the global top-100 and top-200, respectively.

  • ITMO Develops Russia’s First Standard for Designing Innovative Research and Educational Centers

    ITMO University has recently developed the GREEN ZOOM UNIVERSITIES standard for innovative R&D centers, which can be used as a basis for creating high-end research and educational centers. The project has been carried out as part of the Open St. Petersburg small innovative enterprise. GREEN ZOOM UNIVERSITIES is the first standard in Russia that is designed for building innovative research and educational institutions according to the smart city concept and energy-efficient and environmentally friendly construction. ITMO's new research and educational center ITMO Highpark will become the first facility to be built in accordance with the new standard. The project's authors note that in the future, the new solution can be applied when constructing other Russian innovative research and educational institutions.

  • ITMO and University of Bologna Cooperate in Science and Education

    How is recycling organized in Italy, what is transition engineering all about, and how can its principles be applied to the operation of Russian companies in order to form a really effective recycling management system? Anastasia Pavlova, senior lecturer at the Department of Industrial Ecology and Safety, is working on a project that manages raw materials and wastes from the food industry, which answers these questions. She recently won an Italian government grant and has gone to the University of Bologna - the country's second largest university and the oldest educational establishment in Europe. In the course of her internship, not only does Anastasia plan to study Italian practices, but also enhance cooperation with Italian universities.

  • Climate Change: Future Challenges for Urban Scientists

    This end of February has become St. Petersburg’s coldest in the past several decades. According to Alexander Kolesov, Chief Meteorologist at the Northwest Center of the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, we last had such cold weather back in 1955. Europe experienced a drop in temperature as well; actually, the recent cyclone even got a nickname, the Beast from the East. So, what is happening to the climate, and how will these global changes affect St. Petersburg? During a lecture at the Institute of Design & Urban Studies, Artem Pavlovsky, climatologist and member of the State Research and Design Center of St. Petersburg Master Plan, talked about the reasons behind climate change, and its effect on the development of urban territories.

  • "Green Universities: Innovations and Best Practices" Conference: Students Go Green

    Every university in the world is visited by thousands of people every day. Apart from going to lectures and conducting research, these people eat, use computers and printers, wash their hands and the like. In cafeterias, people drink hundreds of liters of coffee and throw out thousands of disposable cups. But, can we stop this endless flow of litter and relieve the burden on the environment that we create? “Yes”, believe those who spent years on developing the "green university" concept. The best projects in this field were presented at the "Green universities: innovations and best practices" conference by representatives of major German and Russian universities.
