Motasem Awaja’s Journey: A 2018 Open Doors Scholarship Winner

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2018: World-Changing Inventions
The Nobel week has just ended in Stockholm. Scientists Arthur Ashkin, Gerard Mourou, and Donna Strickland were awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for breakthroughs in the field of lasers. According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, “the inventions being honored this year have revolutionized laser physics”. ITMO University Scientists Develop Laser for High-Precision Satellite Navigation
Scientists from ITMO University’s Research Institute of Laser Physics have developed a high-power laser with short pulse duration for use in a lunar laser locator. The locator will make it possible to measure the distance between the Moon and Earth with a margin of error of just a few millimeters. This would make it possible to correct calculations of celestial coordinates of the Moon in order to improve the accuracy of satellite navigation systems. Even if you are a daredevil always looking for a new adventure, as autumn sets in and the evenings get darker and chillier, you may start thinking that sitting in your bed all day long cuddled up in a warm blanket and sipping on hot tea is not such a bad idea after all. But don’t give up just yet! If you dare to venture out into the rain and cold, you will see the city from a different angle, just as locals do; without crowds of tourists, with calm and peaceful gardens covered in bright foliage and immersed in fog. Just remember that to fully enjoy the experience, you will have to dress like a local, too: wear a warm coat, rainproof boots, a scarf, gloves, and don’t forget an umbrella!
