  ​What's the difference between distributed and parallel computing? Why is research in this area an intellectual pleasure? How do prestigious awards influence unknown sciences? Godel Prize and Dijkstra Prize winner, Professor Maurice Herlihy from Brown University and Nir Shavit from MIT answered these questions and more. They also explained what inspired them to work in computer science and what they thought about ITMO University. They were lecturing at ITMO's summer school "Practice and Theory in Concurrent Computing" this month.

• European Hackathon Winners Came to ITMO to Study Programming

  The Open Data Hackathon took place in May, in Bolzano (Italy), bringing together developers and data scientists from all across Europe. For 24 hours, the teams worked on creating a working prototype based on one of their ideas. The winners of the hackathon took the main prize: a trip to St. Petersburg for a two-day intensive programming course at ITMO University. This year, ITMO has become a seven-time winner of ACM ICPC and remains the world record holder for most wins

• Show, Don't Tell: ITMO.SHOW Provides Access to All ITMO Presentations

  ITMO University has launched the ITMO.SHOW Presentations Cloud – a useful online tool that provides access to all of the presentations used by the university staff to present its programs and features. Presentations on ITMO’s five schools, introductory presentations for Russian and international audiences, roadmap presentations for Project 5-100’s International Council – all this and more can be found at ITMO.SHOW.

• ITMO Ranks High for International Collaboration in Management Education

  According to the “Ranking of Global Business Schools in Russia and CIS Countries”, prepared by the analytics center “Expert”, ITMO University is one of the top ten universities ranked by publication activity in the field of management. The university is also said to be the leader in its field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) index and the level of international scientific partnership in its subject area. ITMO University’s position in the ranking was calculated according to data on ITMO’s Institute of International Business and Law and the Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations.

• First Day of VK Fest: Sports of the Future

  St. Petersburg is host to the annual VK Fest. Bloggers, artists, athletes, craftsmen and musicians  made popular by the Internet perform onstage and hold workshops. ITMO University participates in VK Fest as well, setting up its own interactive zone. This year, the theme dominating ITMO University’s space is virtual sports. Visitors can try boxing and hang gliding, riding a bike and diving into the water - all in the same spot - just by putting on VR-goggles. Within its interactive zone, the University has also organized workshops on beginner robotics, 3D-printing, drones, gigantic spinners and hacking practices inspired by the “Mr. Robot” TV series.

• How Researchers Use Social Media to Find Cool Spots and Fight Crime

  On July 1 to 8, the Web Science Summer School 2017 was held in St. Petersburg. It was organized by Laboratory of Internet Studies at Higher School of Economics and ITMO University’s International Laboratory “Computer Technologies”. The School’s mentors presented the projects in data set analysis. • Forming Bonds: Visiting Scientists on Chemistry Research and Working Abroad

  Two young extraordinary scientists with extensive international experience – a chemist and a materials science engineer – came to ITMO to conduct research for a few months. They currently work in the Hey-Hawkins Group at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at Leipzig University. Sara Durini is a postdoc from Italy and Rafaella Precker is a Ph.D. student from Brazil. They both took part in research at the Solutions Chemistry of Advanced Materials and Technologies (SCAMT) Laboratory at ITMO. • First Russian Li-Fi Network Launched at ITMO University

  The first light-operated data transmission network in Russia was launched by ITMO University’s Department of Light Technologies and Optoelectronics. The new format, known as Li-Fi, may become an effective alternative to Wi-Fi. It uses optical signals instead of radio waves, and, in fact, transmits data hundreds of times faster than traditional wireless networking. A speed of 50 Mbps was reached in the ITMO University laboratory, which is comparable, and even superior, to a regular Wi-Fi connection. Li-Fi communication channels are considered to provide better security. They may also be used in Wi-Fi “dead-zones”: operating rooms, airplanes, and in other conditions requiring minimization of radio interference.
