  • How to Launch a Tech Project and Succeed

    What does one need to get into tech, and, ultimately, launch their own project? A unique idea, a team of professionals, materials, equipment, financing and, first and foremost, specific knowledge that can’t be gained fast and cheap. Not having even one of these things will often make even the most enthusiastic entrepreneur abandon their work before it’s even started. The staff at ITMO’s Student Laboratory OLIMP, however, believes that finding your place in the tech world isn’t as hard as it may seem. Four years ago, a student team had a similar experience, and they are now ready to share it with others. As part of Gogol Library’s “Popular Science Week”, OLIMP’s co-head Kirill Bodrov gave a talk about the traps and pitfalls of technological entrepreneurship, why it’s important to visit FabLabs and science festivals and where to find the right skills and people for a project.

  • ITMO Student Joins Research at XFEL

    When the European X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) was inaugurated on September 1, a whole range of opportunities became available to the world's scientists - opportunities they could only dream of before. Soon, the new facility will contribute to new advances that seemed impossible due to the lack of equipment this powerful. Dmitrii Potorochin, a PhD student at ITMO University, will become the first to go study at a joint educational program by ITMO University and Freiberg University of Mining and Technology to work on new projects for XFEL. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, he spoke with us about his expectations, his scientific career and what one has to do to participate in major scientific research projects

  • ITMO Scientists Help Link Alzheimer’s to Lack of Energy in Immune Cells

    An international scientific team that includes scientists from ITMO University has discovered why a mutation or lack of TREM2 protein in the nervous system of immune cells increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It turns out that in these cases, immune cells cease to receive nourishment and begin to “digest” themselves. The research was published in Cell journal.

  • Developers Present Projects at Girls4Tech Hackathon

    This summer the Girls4Tech project school for female programmers, engineers and entrepreneurs was launched in St. Petersburg and Moscow. It is organized by ITMO University, the Moscow Polytechnic University and the Moscow office of international accelerator NUMA. In late August, a hackathon was held as part of the program. Participants from both cities met at ITMO University in the offices of the IdealMachine accelerator to try and solve case tasks from ITMO University and the Petrovich and Bayer companies.

  • Researchers use Instagram to Help Tourists See Cities from a Local's Perspective

    Programmers from ITMO University have created a list of places in St. Petersburg which could help locals indirectly give advice to tourists. The scientists created a computer algorithm that allows users to find the most popular museums, cafes, streets and parks based on photographs taken by locals. Results of the research were presented at The International Conference on Computational Science and published in the peer-reviewed journal Procedia Computer Science.
