ITMO Researchers Develop First-Ever Online Platform For Nanozyme Modeling
Nanozymes are artificial enzymes made up of various nanoparticles. In contrast to natural enzymes, nanozymes demonstrate all the same properties while being easier to produce and work with. However, the hardest step in developing nanozyme-based drugs and diagnostic systems is modeling the necessary properties of their particles before synthesis. Researchers from ITMO’s SCAMT Institute have solved this task by developing DiZyme, the first platform in the world that predicts the catalytic activity of nanozymes.

PhD Student Mikhail Maslyaev: Science Gives More Opportunities for Growth
January 21 is celebrated as PhD Student Day in Russia. Over the years, ITMO has welcomed hundreds of PhD students who graduate to pursue an academic career or use their degree for a transition between different research fields. This was the case for Mikhail Maslyaev, who graduated from the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), where he studied meteorology and climate modeling, and then got into machine learning. Now, as a PhD student at ITMO he works at the recently launched Laboratory for Composite AI and specializes in modeling physical systems. Read on to learn how to transition from meteorology to machine learning and being a researcher is more appealing than working at Yandex.

Physicist Tatiana Orlova On New Materials for Soft Robotics and Working in Europe
In 2007, Tatiana Orlova received her PhD in solid state and liquid crystals physics from the Institute of Physics of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. Since then, she has collaborated with Strasbourg University and the University of Bordeaux in France, the University of Twente in the Netherlands, and the University of Southampton in England. Two years ago, she joined the ITMO Fellowship & Professorship program that brings together experts in different fields. In this interview, we asked Tatiana about her international experiences, the projects she is working on at ITMO, and the advice she’d give to young researchers.

Library-on-a-Chip: Scientists Record Data on Nanoscale Layers of Metal-Organic Frameworks for First Time
With the rapid data growth comes the issue of its storage. Year after year, the volume of information increases by leaps and bounds while solid-state drivers remain the most common way to store digital files. However, even though hard drivers are becoming more sustainable and compact, physical books still take up entire buildings. One of the possible solutions was proposed by students and researchers from ITMO University, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and the Nikolaev Institute of Inorganic Chemistry who demonstrated that large datasets can be stored using metal-organic nanometer plates.

Fundamental Holography: ITMO Researchers Develop Method for Printing Holograms in Color
Scientists from ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster developed a method for printing holograms in color in a project supported by the Russian Science Foundation. At the core of the method are volume Bragg gratings, special films with reflecting properties. The proposed technology is extremely simple and doesn’t require any costly equipment. At the same time it has the potential to help produce full color holograms even on a regular printer. This project is a result of collaboration with Krypten, a scientific production organization specializing in optical protection for banknotes, documents, and trademarks.
