• ITMO Scientists Develop Algorithm to Predict Nanomaterials Toxicity

  Nanoparticles and nanomaterials are commonly used in diagnostics and drug delivery systems for oncological treatment. However, in order to be used safely, such materials have to be checked for toxicity. Students from ITMO University have developed an algorithm that can quickly predict a material’s toxicity, with fewer experiments needed to perform the task. Their study was published in Small.

• In It To Win It: In Conversation With Two-Time AI Journey Contest Winner Ammar Ali

  Ammar Ali, a PhD student at ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, has had a fruitful two years: since 2021, he has been twice named the winner of the machine learning contest run by the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (with support from NASA) and, just as many times – a winner of Sberbank’s AI Journey Contest. And that’s not to mention that this year, he secured a victory in three tracks out of four, all while competing solo. Speaking to ITMO.NEWS, Ammar reveals what his biggest challenges were at the contests – and what helped him win.

• Passing Exams, Writing Papers, and Describing Art: Why Neural Networks Won’t Replace Scientists, Writers and Journalists

  A new version of the ChatGPT chatbot, belonging to the acclaimed GPT-3 family of language models, was published in late November. The developers made significant updates to the chatbot, adding a plethora of new features – for instance, the neural network is now capable of producing texts in a specific style, coming up with arguments that support its statements, and making references to its sources or specific works of literature. As it turns out, it can even write an essay for the Unified State Exam in the Russian language – such an experiment was conducted by philologists from the Higher School of Economics along with Andrey Getmanov, a student of ITMO’s Big Data and Machine Learning Master’s program. We spoke with Andrey to better understand the capabilities of neural networks, and find out whether they will replace scholars, writers, and journalists in the near future.

  Students of AI Talent Hub hackathon, a joint project by ITMO and Napoleon IT, used a special neural network to produce new logos for St. Petersburg after analyzing thousands of handwritten notes by its citizens.

• Summer Schools in Computer Science: Parul University Students Visit ITMO

  Every year ITMO organizes several short-term programs during the summer and the winter season. These schools are open to students from around the world and are specially tailored to provide them with cutting-edge skills. This year, we were thrilled to welcome ten budding techies from Parul University, our long-time academic partner, yet again to our campus. They participated in a special six-week program including two ITMO summer schools on competitive programming and machine learning. The middle two weeks of their stay involved a tailor-made course on data science and Python programming. • Applied AI Challenge: Winners’ Tips and New Opportunities for Participants

  Applied AI Challenge, an online hackathon in machine learning and data analysis, will launch at ITMO on May 17. This year, it is organized in partnership with Tochka Bank and Gazprom Neft’s Science and Technology Center.
