  • ITMO Dean Sergey Makarov on Profession, Publicity, and Scientific Openness

    Sergey Makarov is one of the youngest DSc holders at ITMO University. Together with Anvar Zakhidov, a professor at the University of Texas in Dallas, he led the formation of ITMO’s Laboratory of Hybrid Nanophotonics and Optoelectronics. Sergey has been nominated for various awards, including the President of Russia Award for Young Scientists in the Field of Science and Innovation and Research Excellence Award Russia as the youngest and most productive author in materials sciences. Not only does he run the laboratory, conduct research, and publish articles but also organizes conferences and international schools, and works as an editor in two scientific journals. ITMO.NEWS talked to Sergey to learn more about how to succeed in science, why it is important to reach out to the widest audience, what football players and scientists have in common, and whether it is possible to research on your own.

  • School for Young Scientists: ITMO University Hosts PI School by SCAMT

    The school will feature presentations by leading scholars from different parts of Russia who will speak about their research teams known in the country and abroad. Participants will be able to create laboratories at their higher education institutions with the support of the school’s mentors. The school is organized by ITMO University and the Center for Strategic Research North-West.

  • School Student from St. Petersburg Becomes First Author of Article Published in Leading Chemistry Journal

    Following the results of her internship at ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster, Veronika Elkina wrote a review of the multiple fields that promethium can be applied in. The article was published in Frontiers in Chemistry, a top-quartile chemistry journal.

  • R&D Projects Competition Winners On Their Creations and University Support

    In late March, the results of ITMO’s practice-oriented R&D projects competition were announced. A total of 25 participants presented their ideas with only 10 getting grants from the University. These grants don’t only include financial support, but also help with project paperwork, and team work management. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the heads of the winning teams to ask them why their projects are special and how they are planning to use the grants.

  • Four ITMO University Students Receive SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship

    Four young researchers from ITMO University were chosen to receive the prestigious scholarship of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). The results of the scholarship competition have been recently announced on the SPIE website. SPIE annually supports students and PhD researchers working in promising fields. The scholarship is meant to cover attendance of SPIE conferences, participation in educational courses, and purchasing learning materials.   • School Students from All Over Russia and Belarus Take Part in the Congress of Young Scientists

    The Congress of Young Scientists took place on April 15-18 at ITMO University. This year, school and university students presented their research online. Ten sections for school students were attended by 118 participants from 34 cities all over Russia and Belarus. Their young age didn’t stop the participants from conducting real scientific research with the help of their advisors. We asked some of the students what their projects are about, how they liked the online format, and what they want to work on in future.

    The novel coronavirus pandemic has forced theaters, museums and concert halls to move into the digital space – and scientific events are not an exception. This year, the Congress of Young Scientists was set, for the 17th time, to bring together talented researchers at ITMO University. But 2020 turned out to be historic, and this Congress – unique.
