  • ITMO.STARS Winners On Career, Science, and New Projects

    The ITMO.STARS contest (application deadline: July 25) allows talented applicants to enroll at ITMO University regardless of their Unified State Exam scores. This initiative was launched five years ago and since then, several dozen gifted applicants submitted their projects and used them to enter the university. Last year, 19 students became finalists of the contest. In this story, some of them describe what they’ve managed to achieve since then.

  • FAQ: Dealing With Anxiety

    There are many reasons why we might feel anxiety – from global events and crises to exams or our everyday chores. But what are the mechanisms behind it? And are there any experimentally proven ways to overcome anxiety? With these questions, we turned to researchers from ITMO’s Center for Neuroscience in Education, headed by Maxim Likhanov, a participant of ITMO’s Fellowship & Professorship program. The center has recently launched a project aiming to develop and implement techniques that will improve the mental well-being of ITMO students.

    A round of project defenses was recently held at ITMO University for the participants of a competition for practice-oriented research and R&D projects. All in all, 13 were presented at the event – all of the projects received financial support in 2020 and 2021, while those that are yet to reach completion will receive further assistance.

Vlada Petrova, a fourth-year student at ITMO’s Faculty of Energy and Ecotechnology, does research at the intersection of quantum chemistry and ecology.   • First Project Defenses Held as Part of ITMO’s 2030 Development Strategy

    A recent session of ITMO University’s Coordination Council included an interim review of the first projects implemented as part of the university’s 2030 Development Strategy. Four teams reported on their progress thus far; instead of a formal report, the defenses took place as open discussions.     For the second year in a row, the ITMO Accelerator has held a winter school for students of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (Mexico). This year, the school brought together 24 students. During the two-week course, the school’s participants had the chance to try their hand at developing their own projects from scratch.

  • $3,000 for a Special Kid’s Drawing: How ITMO Student Uses NFT Auctions for Charity

    In the summer of 2021, Daniil Zuyev, a student at ITMO’s Computer Technologies in Design Bachelor’s program, created the Osobenny Mir (A Special World) project based on the drawings created by children from the Yom-Yom inclusive center. A charity project by design, Osobenny Mir donates half of its revenue from NFT auctions to the center. However, unexpectedly, it also opened the world of contemporary art to Daniil – selected works were showcased at a virtual exhibition at the Hermitage and the Disartive Art & Tech Fair in Nizhny Novgorod, and one of the drawings was purchased for 230,000 rubles (about $3,000). In this article, Daniil tells us how he decided to combine NFT and charity and what it feels like to suddenly become a contemporary artist.

  • Participants of BRIDGE Project Share Their Stories and Achievements

    The international project BRIDGE started out as a research initiative meant to explore the possibility of enhancing university graduates’ presence on the labor market by letting them tackle real-life business challenges during their studies. The project has had six sessions since its launch in 2019. That same year, participants from ITMO University got the chance to travel to Finland, Norway, and Murmansk and recently met for the final session at their alma mater. During the week-long event, students attended lectures on entrepreneurship and project management, as well as tried their hand at solving problems faced by business communities.
