Two ITMO University Lecturers Receive Potanin Foundation Grant
The Vladimir Potanin Foundation grant contest for university lecturers has concluded its 2020 run. A total of 747 representatives of 75 leading Russian universities took part in the selection. The grant was awarded to 100 successful candidates, two of whom are from ITMO University. Education Helps You Understand Things, Science Communication – to Explain Them: An Interview with ITMO University Graduate Daniil Shirokov
Daniil Shirokov is one of the first graduates of the Science Communication program at ITMO University. By the time he started his Master’s studies, he already had a Bachelor’s degree in biophysics. Now, Daniil works as a science communicator at one of the biggest private clinics in St. Petersburg while writing a thesis on philosophy. ITMO.NEWS contacted him and found out what it’s like to switch from hard science to humanities, why a medical center would need a science communicator and how he studies the way scientific knowledge changes at modern universities.

ITMO’s Science Communicators Hosted a Discussion at the Total Dictation Conference
At the end of January, Total Dictation hosted the 8th international conference in Moscow, titled “Dynamic processes in contemporary Russian language”. As part of the event, the organizers introduced the author of the text for the 2020 dictation, chose its capital and identified its main theme. Apart from that, volunteers, organizers and experts participated in the discussion on the topic “How popularization in humanities differs from popularization in natural sciences?”, which was moderated by Ilya Stakheev, deputy director of ITMO University’s Center for Science Communication.

Daniil Sharov on Being a Physicist and a Science Communicator
Daniil Sharov received his Bachelor’s degree as a teacher of physics, but decided to continue his studies after graduation and got into ITMO’s Master’s program in science communication. These days, he is working at ITMO University’s Museum of Optics, teaching at ITMO.KIDS while also developing a system for evaluating the efficiency of exhibitions at science museums. Medical Journalist Elizaveta Babitskaya on Being an Informed Patient in Russia
Having received her Bachelor’s degree in the field of quality management, ITMO University graduate Elizaveta Babitskaya decided to dramatically change her career and enrolled in ITMO University’s Master’s program in science communication. Elizaveta is now working as a medical journalist at the SeverGroup Medicine company, as well as collaborating with the Meduza magazine. Open Lecture by World-Famous Scientist John Ioannidis at ITMO University
On October 25, ITMO University will welcome Stanford University professor John Ioannidis, who will deliver the lecture “Medical evidence: flawed, but possible to fix!”, organized at the initiative of evidence-based medicine blog Medfront. SciComm at Sirius: ITMO Graduates Help Kids Explore Science and Art
ITMO University’s Center for Science Communication and the Sirius Educational Center are intensifying their collaboration in the field of science communication: during workshops organized at the Center by ITMO graduates, school students learned about science communication and Art&Science and took part in discussions on technological modification of the human genome. Throughout the next year, more ITMO University students are expected to travel to Sochi to take part in similar initiatives.
