• Best Science Communicators Awarded at ITMO University

  On June 28, the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON) announced the most successful science communicators in Russia. Among the awardees are the staff of the National Research University Higher School of Economics and the authors of the Chrdk educational project. The awards ceremony was held at ITMO University as part of the third Forum of Science Communicators.

• ITMO University Will Host 3rd Forum of Science Communicators

  On June 28, 2019, the third Forum of Science Communicators will be held in St. Petersburg. Supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the event will become a platform for discussion and experience exchange between science journalists, science communicators, as well as media relations officers and researchers. This year’s forum will bring together both Russian and international experts in the field of science communication, who will discuss professional and ethical standards in science journalism, the development of the international scientific community, and many other questions. Among the highlights of the event will be the awards ceremony for the Communication Laboratory 2019 award for the best science communication department among Russian scientific organizations, and the Rusnano Russian Science Writer of the Year award for the best science journalist.

• Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum: How Science Communication Helps Bridge Divide Between the Nations

  2019 marks the end of the 10th Stanford US-Russia Forum. SURF, as it is also known, is an exchange program for Russian and American students, postdocs, and researchers from the two nations’ top universities, during which the participants can discuss the key topics of US-Russia relations and suggest ways to improve them. Daria Denisova, the deputy head of ITMO University’s Science Communication Center, spoke with ITMO.NEWS about her experience of working on a space project with an MIT researcher, meeting with NASA staff, exploring historical records in the Hoover Tower, and visiting a historical Russian fortress in Fort Ross, California.

• Polytechnic Museum’s Curator Alexey Semikhatov: Logic and Math Help Us Predict the Unknown

• Green Icebergs, Planet Nine, and End of Opportunity Rover: Top Science News of 2019 So Far

  Last week, the St. Petersburg’s Atomic Energy Information Center hosted the 7th discussion about the latest trends in science and technology. The event brought together leading science communicators in the field of cosmonautics, chemistry and physics, including Mikhail Kurushkin, an associate professor at ITMO University ChemBio Cluster, Dmitriy Epstein, a researcher at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Pavel Piskarev, the chief designer at the Research Institute of Electrophysical Facilities and a coordinator at ITER. • German Week in St. Petersburg: Experts Discuss Science Communication and the Social Mission of Modern Science

  As part of the 16th German Week in St. Petersburg, ITMO University’s Science Communication and Outreach Office has organized an open discussion on the topic “The Changing Social Mission of Today’s Scientific Organizations”. Speakers from the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) discussed the work of scientific organizations in Russia and Germany and these organizations’ impact on social development.

• ITMO University Starts Lectures at New Holland

  Every year, the New Holland Island hosts Open Lecture Hall, a series of regular lectures and other educational events for visitors of the city’s trendiest public space. Among the project’s partners are the European University in St. Petersburg, the Higher School of Economics, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as other cultural and educational organizations. Starting this April, ITMO University joins the project and launches its own series of lectures on science and technology.

• Science Communicator Daria Dvorzhitskaya on How to Measure the Effectiveness of Science Pop Events

  What’s the key to measuring the effectiveness of how science-pop exhibitions are conducted? How to ensure the maximum involvement of the general public in science? These and other questions are in the focus of Daria Dvorzhitskaya, a member of ITMO’s Science Communication Center, who conducts her research on the topic using the events held by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) as the main example. Having graduated from the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Daria has already accomplished several projects in Europe. ITMO.NEWS met with the researcher to learn about her future work at ITMO and how the experience she obtained at CERN can be applied in Russia.

• ITMO Launches New Specialization in Science Communication in Medicine and Biotechnology

  ITMO University’s Master’s program in Science Communication has recently launched a new track in science communication in the field of biotechnology and medicine. Students joining the program this year will be able to choose a separate track within the program, which will give them an opportunity to work with databases in medicine and healthcare, as well as learn more about the structure of medical organizations. The program’s graduates will be able to work as medical journalists and science communicators, PR specialists in major biotechnological companies, clinics, and medical organizations both in Russia and abroad.

• ITMO University and EUSP Launch Joint Master’s Program ‘Science and Technologies in Society’

  ITMO University and the European University at St. Petersburg have established a collaboration in the field of Master’s-level education and joint research. This Tuesday, February 19, the Rectors of these two universities have signed a partnership agreement and discussed their first joint Master’s program in the field of social research on science and technology.
