  • Eco-Friendly Board Game Teaches Students to Combine Business and Sustainable Development

    Master’s students from ITMO University learned about sustainable development at a workshop on the board game Ecologic. Sustainable development is the concept of balance between humanity’s ecological, economic and social goals. This kind of balance is what Ecologic aims to inspire people to strive towards. ITMO.NEWS spoke to the game’s creators and their collaborators about what makes the game enjoyable - and beneficial to the world.

  • Science Communication at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

    Alexandra Borisova from ITMO’s Science Communication and Outreach Office spent a year in Germany at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, one of Europe’s leading science communication centers. She was awarded a German Chancellor Fellowship (the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation) that allowed her to work on her research project on science communication in Russia. ITMO.NEWS asked Alexandra some questions about the program, her research, and about ITMO’s new European partners.

  • Russia to Launch First Educational Media-Project on Cancer Prevention

    Cancer prevention foundation “Ne naprasno” (its name translates as "Not in vain" from Russian - Ed.) won a Presidential grant for creating Profilaktika.Media - an educational media project on evidence-based medicine and oncology. Two Master’s students of ITMO’s Science Communication Program are responsible for this project: Ksenia Zhirnova and Elizaveta Dubovik. ITMO.NEWS spoke with these students and found out what it's all about: namely, what is cancer prevention; why there are still so many misconceptions about cancer in Russia; how such a media project could help cancer patients, as well as improve doctors’ training.

  • ITMO Tops Science Popularisation Ranking

    Indicator, a popular science site, has recently come up with a science popularisation ranking. It has evaluated effectiveness of PR activities of universities participating in Project 5-100 in the first half of 2017. The results were based on a questionnaire developed by Indicator, which was filled out by staff members of the universities’ PR-departments. ITMO topped this ranking, receiving 36 points out of 39 possible. Tomsk Polytechnic University (35 points), Higher School of Economics (35 points) and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (34 points) came second and third in the ranking, accordingly.

  • WCSJ-2017: Making Science More Popular Than Politics

    The 10th World Conference of Science Journalists, the world’s biggest event in the field of science communication and journalism, took place on October 26-30 in San Francisco. The next conference will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2019. ITMO University and the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON) plan to conduct a pre-conference press-tour to Russia for foreign science journalists. Head of ITMO’s Center for Science Communication Dmitry Malkov has told us why such events are needed to develop science communication and journalism in Russia.

  • Science Film for the Modern Viewer

    The 12th International Science Film Festival “World of Knowledge” took place in St. Petersburg on October 18 to 20. This year’s topic was Ecology. The festival presented scientific and educational films from Russia, France, Germany, Australia, Spain, the UK and others. The program included a film competition, a separate short film program, scientific lectures, workshops and talks on ecology, film and art. Several screenings were held at ITMO University. ITMO.NEWS visited the festival and asked the guests what they look for in modern science films and how it can appeal to a mass audience.

    A usual resume describing your education, skills, and list of awards is a thing of the past. Now, recruiters also analyse social media profiles of job applicants, and some focus on big data. According to data from Deloitte, about 40% of HR departments around the world have started using these tools last year. The preferences of applicants are also changing: even now, people aren’t chasing a lot of money, preferring creative freedom and new opportunities for development. Are big companies ready for these changes, why is there a special need today for corporate PR and, finally, how important is your social media presence? Vadim Fedotov, the General Manager of Gazprom Media Technology, shared all about this and more with students from the Master’s Program in Science Communication.   • BBC Expert: How to Make Science More Accessible

    Julian Siddle, a BBC science journalist and the producer for BBC World Service and BBC Radio, has given a series of talks at Central Exhibition Hall Manege and ITMO University as part of the UK-Russia Year of Science and Education 2017. Speaking to the audience, he discussed the ways to explain gravity waves to children, why major discoveries often begin with the simplest questions and whether scientific content can compete with the social media’s top vloggers.

  • "In English, Please": De-Jargonizer Helps Make Science Accessible

    Israeli scientists have developed software that can analyze a scientific article’s level of comprehensibility. The algorithm, named De-Jargonizer, separates words into three categories according to their frequency of use and, using a simple formula, determines how accessible the text will be to a wider audience. Having tested their software on articles from PLOS ONE, the scientists learned that the abstracts of some articles can consist of rare scientific terms by up to 27 percent. Developers hope that their program will help adapt texts to be more accessible to a majority of people.
