  • ITMO University in 2021: A Year in Review

    This year we celebrated 121 years of ITMO University. As with any other year, we had no shortage of challenges – but nothing we couldn’t rise above. There were also great new achievements to be proud of, such as grants, prizes, and awards and some extraordinary research accomplishments. On the international scale, we welcomed nearly 900 new international students.

  • ITMO University Receives Grant to Fund AI Research Center

    ITMO University’s AI Research Center “Strong AI in Industry” became one of the grant winners in the contest held as part of the federal Artificial Intelligence project. The selection process was conducted by experts of the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation. The research center will be granted more than 1 billion rubles.

  • AI vs. Nanotechnology: ITMO Scientists on What Tech to Expect in the Near Future

    The online project Stay The F Home Bar launched almost concurrently with the start of the pandemic. One of its virtual rooms, called I Speak You Listen, is designed as a venue for open lectures. ITMO University scientists recently tried out this new format; on May 7, George Zograf, PhD student of the Faculty of Physics and Engineering, and Andrey Filchenkov, head of the Machine Learning Lab, took part in an open talk during which they discussed the near future of AI and nanoscience – and whether we should fear them.

  • MTS and ITMO Launch Master’s Program on Conversational AI

    MTS PJSC (NYSE: MBT, MOEX: MTSS), Russia’s largest telecommunications and digital services provider, and ITMO University announce the launch of the Conversational AI Technologies specialization as part of the System and Applied Software Master’s program of the School of Computer Technologies and Control. Admission to the program has already been opened and the first students will enroll this fall.

  • MIT Professor Marin Soljacic: AI Will Play a Large Role in the Future of Research

    In 2007, the New York Times named Marin Soljačić as the author of one of that year’s top 70 “curious, inspired, and perplexing” inventions. The celebrated scientist, winner of numerous awards, and MIT professor is known to the world as, first and foremost, a researcher of wireless energy transfer technology. His experiments and studies on the subject are often compared to those of Nicola Tesla. In recent years, Prof. Soljačić has been exploring the applications of photonic crystals in solar energy production and the usage of machine learning algorithms in photonics. He presented a report on his latest research during the METANANO conference, which has recently concluded in St. Petersburg. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Marin Soljačić discusses the effects of the latest tech on research and explains why scientists must not limit themselves to a single field of study.

  • Yandex Director of Marketing Andrey Sebrant: We’re Living in the Age of Implementation

    On December 18, the Winter School “It’s Your Call!”, organized by ITMO University and Sberbank, began its second season. 180 bachelor and Master’s students from all over Russia joined each other in St. Petersburg. On the first day, Andrey Sebrant – Yandex company’s Director of Product Marketing – welcomed the students and shared some advice on how not to get lost on one’s journey into the future.

  • ITMO Joins New Foresight Project on Innovations

    Which sectors of the economy will be at the forefront of introducing relevant technologies like AI and data analysis? Which regulatory actions are necessary in order to make Russian innovative enterprises more efficient? Which innovative branches of the Russian industry will be offering most jobs in the coming years? ITMO University has recently become part of a workgroup on forecasting the implementation process of advanced digital and intelligent industrial technologies, robotic systems, new materials and construction methods, Big Data processing systems, machine learning and AI as envisioned by the Scientific and Technological Development Strategy of the Russian Federation. ITMO.NEWS spoke to Natalya Lukovnikova, head of the Center for Science and Technology Foresight, about this new project and the university’s contribution to it.

  • Results of European Parliament Discussion on Robot Economy

    The European Parliament has recently hosted a workshop on the topic “Economy of Robots”. Although a complete integration of robots and AI into humanity’s everyday life is expected to come in a few generations, the process has already begun. Experts outlined the issues that may arise in the meantime. Among the workshop’s participants were Aleksandr Kapitonov, a research assistant at ITMO’s Department of Computer Science and Control Systems, and Sergei Lonshakov, an ITMO alumnus and founder of Airalab.

  • RAISON Developers on Using AI for Financial Analysis

    On November 11 to 14, the d10e conference on financial technologies was held in Davos, Switzerland. Among the topics were FinTech, ICO, blockchain, sharing economy. RAISON, a project by ITMO’s small innovative enterprise “Intellectual Information Systems” (IIS) and Threesixty Elements S.A. was presented there. In the near future, RAISON will become an investor’s pocket assistant: the system analyses the market, news and historical data to advise users on investment strategies. The project is based on elements of the AI system AKIL.IO developed by IIS. Denis Zhuk, AKIL.IO’s sales manager and PhD student at ITMO, and Andrey Gordeychuk, head of IIS, talk about RAISON and the integration of new technologies into the investment ecosystem.
