  • Light Can Cool: ITMO Scientists Propose Concept of Optical Nano-Refrigerator

    A group of scientists from ITMO University, including one Master’s and one PhD student, has proposed a new method for quick cooling-down of surfaces using perovskite and light nanoparticles. In the future, this principle can be used to cool nano-lasers in optical chips, increase the life of solar panels, and create smart glass. The article was published in the journal Nanoscale.

  • Scientists Describe Universal Way of Compressing and Stopping Light for Ultrafast Optical Data Transmission

    An international group of scientists which includes an ITMO researcher has published in one of the world’s leading science journals a paper dedicated to the controlled change of the speed and spectrum of a light signal. In their work, the researchers summed up the data from past experiments and theoretical studies to pave the way for the creation of new devices for high-speed data transfer.   • THz Success: ITMO Master’s Student Presents His Research in Paris

    ITMO University student Egor Litvinov believes that 2019 may well be his lucky year: he’s won a presidential scholarship to pursue studies abroad, became a laureate of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship and attended international conferences in Paris and Yokohama, where he also got the opportunity to present his research.   • ITMO University PhD Student Awarded Ostrogradski Scholarship

    Tatyana Latynina, a PhD student at ITMO University’s Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information, made it to the list of awardees of the Ostrogradski Program’s Scholarship. Held annually, the program aims at helping young scientists from Russia visit research laboratories in France to conduct joint research projects together with their French colleagues. This fall, Tatyana will spend a month and a half at the University of Rouen, where she will study advanced electrical aluminum alloys. Such materials are now being studied intensively by various research groups all over the world. Research in this field opens up new opportunities for controlling the materials’ properties, such as their strength, heat resistance, and electrical conductivity.

  • Max Planck Institute Scientist Nikolai Avdievitch on New MRT Devices and Opportunities They Offer

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technology that produces detailed images of organs and tissues based on the magnetic nuclear resonance (MNR) technology. Developed several decades ago, the technology is now extremely widespread and available in many modern clinics. However, researchers continue working on improving its accuracy and developing new, more efficient systems. Nikolai Avdievitch, a senior research associate at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen (Germany) and leading specialist engaged in the development of new sensors for experimental MRI systems, recently taught a course for the students of ITMO University’s Master’s program “Radiofrequency Systems and Devices”, and shared with ITMO.NEWS about his work and the latest research in the field of MRI.

  • Researchers Propose New Model For Catalytic Reactions For Oil Industry

    An international research team has shown that the conversion process of natural gas into methanol depends not only on the permanent characteristics of the catalysts used but also on the properties that these catalysts exhibit in the course of the reaction. This discovery can revolutionize the oil and wood industries by introducing modern technologies, which will allow manufacturers to process waste into valuable chemical products.   • Prawns and Aerogels: Sol-Gel Science Slam

    On August 29, ITMO University hosted a Science Slam competition as part of the Sol-Gel Conference. The event brought together PhD students and junior research associates from Switzerland, Israel, France and Russia, who shared about their research in an unusual format.   • Omega-3 Fatty Acids of Plant Origin and Biomedical Tasks: ITMO Scientists’ Research at University of Lorraine

    This fall, PhD student Daria Kuznetsova and Master’s student Mariam Muradova from the Faculty of Food Biotechnologies and Engineering, who are also members of the “Biotechnologies of the Third Millennium” international research center, will go to the University of Lorraine to conduct research in the field of life sciences. For Daria, this will be her second trip to France, where she’ll continue to work on her research thesis. Mariam spent last year’s spring semester at the University of Verona, Italy, and this year, she will continue her research in the field of plant biotechnology.   • ITMO Researchers Describe Carbon Dot Structure, Discover Red Emission Amplification Method

    Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, also known as carbon dots, were first described in the early ‘00s. But even today, scientists around the globe still have not reached a consensus on their inner structure and emission process. Carbon dots have a great deal of potential applications due to their biocompatibility with the human body and the ease and low cost of their production as compared to semiconductor quantum dots. Researchers from ITMO University have published two research papers in which they put forth their answers to the burning questions about carbon dots.
