  • New Luminescent Aerogel Production Method Opens Up Possibilities for Unique Materials

    Researchers from ITMO University have developed a new all-purpose method for the production of metal-oxide-based upconversion aerogels doped with rare-earth elements erbium and ytterbium. The use of this method has resulted in the production of a material with an improved structure and unique luminescent properties that has potential applications in various fields from optics to medicine, including biodiagnostics. This research has been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemical Communications.

  • ITMO PhD Students Share Their Impressions of Internship in Singapore

    In the course of nine months, from October 2018 to July 2019, Oksana Severyukhina and Ivan Derevitsky, PhD students and staff of ITMO University’s National Center for Cognitive Technologies, did an internship at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The internship gave them an opportunity to work on their projects at one of the world’s most technologically advanced university campuses, as well as travel a lot and establish some useful connections.

  • ITMO Researchers Discover New Properties of Terahertz Radiation

    The staff of ITMO University’s International Laboratory of Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies have recently published an article in a prestigious journal Scientific Reports. Their work explores the advantages of the Z-scan method with pulsed terahertz radiation. Based on the results of their research, the scientists proposed a set of recommendations for future studies of nonlinear properties of terahertz radiation.   • ITMO Master’s Student on Internship in Israel and a New Cancer Treatment Method

  • SCAMT Workshop Week: English-Language Summer School on Topical Research and Cutting-Edge Equipment

    On June 24-30, ITMO University’s SCAMT Laboratory held the international summer educational course SCAMT Workshop Week. Participants from Greece, Iran, China and Russia attended lectures and workshops and collaborated on projects in groups. The main goal of the course was to help the young scientists obtain experience of working with modern equipment and achieve a practical, real-world result.

  • Scientists Develop New Probes for Magnetic Resonance Microscopy Based on Unique Ceramics

    Scientists from ITMO University in collaboration with colleagues of the NeuroSpin research center and Institut Fresnel from France have developed a new probe for magnetic resonance microscopy. A unique composite material developed by St. Petersburg enterprise Ceramics Jsc. and patented in Russia and the US was used for this project. Experiments showed that the new probe’s sensitivity is two times higher than that of the commonly used probes made of copper. The probes developed with the help of ceramics make it possible to decrease the time required to collect data from biological samples as well as increase the quality of images. The article was published in Advanced Materials.

  • PhD Student from MIT on Internship at ITMO, Russian Culture and Science

    Charles Roques-Carmes is a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who works under the guidance of Marin Soljačić, a renowned scientist famous for his research in the field of wireless nonradiative energy transfer and various issues of photonics and electromagnetics. The young researcher came to ITMO for a three-month internship in order to work with scientists from the Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. Charles stresses that coming to Russia was a well-thought-out decision: here, not only can he work in a promising research field, but he can also practice his Russian which he has been learning since his school days. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, he spoke about the specifics of working at ITMO University and why the Russian language can often appear harder than studying nanophotonics.

  • ITMO University Researchers Develop ‘Smart Table’ for Wireless Charging at Record Distance

    Scientists from ITMO University have developed a prototype of a metasurface-based device that can be placed or embedded in a table in order to provide wireless charge to several gadgets at once. This “smart table” can wirelessly transmit energy without significant losses over the distance of a meter, which is hundreds of times more than the limit of existing wireless chargers. The researchers experimentally tested the device’s performance and described the physics behind it. The study was published in Physics Review Applied.

  • Researchers Discover New Nanoparticles with Exclusively Lateral Light Scattering

    An international team of physicists has produced first evidence of particles capable of scattering light in lateral direction by suppressing forward and backward scattering. The researchers studied the physics behind this phenomenon and confirmed their theoretical results with an experiment in the microwave spectral range, proving that lattices or metasurfaces made of these materials can be completely invisible. These results can be used in a variety of applications including light routing, binary-coded holograms, and sensors. The study was published in Physical Review Letters.
