  • What Are Vernacular Regions and Why Study Them?

Should we perceive a city according to its administrative layout, or it is better to consider how its citizens fathom the urban environment? In the late 1960s, American geographists introduced the term “vernacular region”. In recent years, Russian urban scientists also started to research this subject. At a joint seminar organized by ITMO’s Institute of Design and Urban Studies and MLA+, experts discussed why it’s necessary to study regions that are not outlined by official borders, and how that can contribute to improving the urban environment.
