Programmer Alexander Mordvintsev on Working at Google, Curiosity and Future of Programming
Alexander Mordvintsev, an ITMO University graduate and a researcher at Google, visited ITMO University’s National Center for Cognitive Technologies with a series of lectures on programming. In addition to analyzing real cases and providing valuable tips for young professionals, Alexander spoke to ITMO.NEWS about how he landed a job at the international corporation, switched from being a software engineer to a researcher, launched his project DeepDream, as well as what projects he is currently working on and why novice programmers should pay attention to modern chemistry and biology.

60,000 Steps a Day: ITMO Students on Organizing Mendeleev-150 Conference
What’s it like to take part in organizing a major international conference as a first-year student? How do you communicate with scientists from the world over and solve an avalanche of issues in mere hours? This July, ITMO University was home to the 4th International Conference on the Periodic Table, which brought together renowned chemists, physicists, educators, and historians of chemistry from Russia, the US, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Israel, China, and other countries. The event’s organizing committee was comprised, in part, of students of ITMO’s School of Biotechnology and Cryogenic Systems, who spoke to ITMO.NEWS about their experience and their future plans.

10th Bike Ride with Rector: Long-Time Participants Share Favorite Routes and Experiences
This Wednesday, students, staff, and friends of ITMO University took part in the 10th Bike Ride with ITMO’s Rector Vladimir Vasilyev. Traditionally held every spring and fall – the start and end of the biking season, – the event sees students, professors, researchers, and associates of the university ride together on a route past the picturesque locations of St. Petersburg’s Primorsky District: from the Victory Park, past the Zenit Arena stadium and Yakhtenny Bridge, and to the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg Park. ITMO.NEWS spoke to some of the event’s long-time participants to learn about their favorite experiences, the role of biking in their everyday life, and their suggestions on making the ride even better.

How to Make Cities More Livable: Norwegian Expert Knows the Answer
There are many industrial cities in Russia, such as Norilsk, Monchegorsk, Magnitogorsk, and so on. Nowadays, more and more people leave them for bigger cities with better life prospects. Some 20 years ago, Norway faced the same problem, but they managed to solve it by means of smart urban planning and innovations. Gunnar Olav Furu has been involved in city planning for more than 30 years and now works as a municipal advisor in his home city Sunndal. Last week, Mr. Furu met with ITMO University students to talk about innovations and discuss how to make St. Petersburg more comfortable to live in.

MSU Student on Working in Different Laboratories and Doing Internship at ITMO
Alexander Chezhegov, a third-year student at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Faculty of Physics, took part in the “I am a Professional” competition and the “It’s Your Call!” Winter School that was held at ITMO University last winter. His project focused on creating a hydrophobic coating for solar cells. In July 2018, he did an internship at ITMO’s International Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, where he studied hybrid states of light in low-dimensional quantum materials. In his interview with ITMO.NEWS, he shared his experience of working in different research groups.
