  • RAISON Developers on Using AI for Financial Analysis

On November 11 to 14, the d10e conference on financial technologies was held in Davos, Switzerland. Among the topics were FinTech, ICO, blockchain, sharing economy. RAISON, a project by ITMO’s small innovative enterprise “Intellectual Information Systems” (IIS) and Threesixty Elements S.A. was presented there. In the near future, RAISON will become an investor’s pocket assistant: the system analyses the market, news and historical data to advise users on investment strategies. The project is based on elements of the AI system AKIL.IO developed by IIS. Denis Zhuk, AKIL.IO’s sales manager and PhD student at ITMO, and Andrey Gordeychuk, head of IIS, talk about RAISON and the integration of new technologies into the investment ecosystem.

  • Fabio Bagarello on Quantum Computing and Importance of Interdisciplinary Research

Professor Fabio Bagarello from the University of Palermo (Italy) came to ITMO to give a talk on the  applications of quantum theory in the mathematical modeling of various systems. He told ITMO.NEWS about the possible use of quantum computation in modeling and why quantum computers are not on sale yet. Professor Bagarello is certain: students and scientists still have a lot to learn and work on in this field. The newly opened Master’s program "Cognitive Technologies and Quantum Intellect" - one of a kind in Russia so far - will train specialists in the field of mathematical modeling of complex socio-economic processes using modern methods of quantum information theory and cognitive technologies. Read our material and find out more about quantum computations, areas of their application and why specialists in the field of quantum mechanics need to have a good knowledge of sociology, political science and economics.

  • How Neural Networks Help Scientists

In just a few days, the neural-network based app Teleport, which turns a simple selfie into a colorful collage in the blink of an eye, rose to second place on App Store’s Top Free Games list. With 1.5 million downloads, the service has gone viral on social media, coming close to the success of similar photo editing apps such as Meitu, FaceApp and Prizma. These days neural networks help us pick hair and lipstick colors, come up with beer names and draw cat pictures. But they are capable of much more complex tasks in business, finance and science. Medical diagnostics, searching for hypervelocity stars and rare animals – here’s how neural networks are helping scientists today.

  • Game Development Education on the Rise in Russia

According to Newzoo, the global games market will reach almost 109 billion dollars by the end of 2017. University programs that train future game developers also grow in number. The Russian games market is expected to reach 1.4 billion by the end of this year, say Newzoo. However there are still very few game development programs in Russia. Where and how can one learn the subject and can universities train developers and managers at an acceptable level? This was the topic of a panel discussion at the GameDev Meetup organized by GameBeets community. The event’s organizers and speakers spoke with ITMO.NEWS about the future of game development in higher education, talent shortage, market needs and the reasons why neural networks can’t replace humans – at least for now.

  • Technopark Resident VISmart: Helping Machines Think Like Humans

Semantic information processing technologies and semantic web software will soon allow search engines to think almost like humans. Among other things, they would be able to make logical connections between various bits of data and combine databases into unified information systems. Better yet, this related data will be visualized in a form comprehensible to a regular user. The company VISmart, a resident of ITMO University’s Technopark, is working on several projects in this field. Recently they were joined by a scientist from Austria whose research will help VISmart in improving their service that focuses on searching for and visualizing information using semantic technology.

  • ITMO Students in Singapore: How to Please Customers by Analyzing Their Social Media

In future, social networks could make advertisers’ work much easier. Big Data analysis algorithms can already figure out the ins and outs of a customer’s personality. They can be used to track negative reviews, determine the customers’ desires, identify their psychological type and tailor advertisements according to each customer’s data. A group of Master’s Degree students from the Computer Technologies Department have studied this topic at the National University of Singapore. They have told us about their research and the pros and cons of living in a city state.
