  • ITMO Researchers Team Up With French Scientists on New Type of Hybrid Nanoparticles

    Scientists from ITMO’s Department of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials have won a grant as part of a federal targeted program. The three-year project will be carried out in collaboration with the Institute Jean Lamour (France), which has a great deal of experience in production and characterization of new hybrid nanostructures which have no counterparts among the existing materials and structures. This collaborative research will include the development of methods for the creation of new hybrid crystalline nanoparticles based on two metals, metal-insulators and metal-organics, as well as proving their unique optical properties. In future, they may serve as a foundation for cheap and effective hybrid photonic nanodevices.

  • Neural Networks Can Identify Any Person’s Age

    An international group of scientists which included researchers from ITMO University has developed an algorithm that can determine a person’s age, based on their nationality and sex, using an online blood test. Data from more than 120,000 people from Canada, South Korea, and Eastern Europe has been used to identify the key ageing indicators of these populations. Then, they taught neural networks to account for the relevance of particular indicators. This contributed to improving the technique’s precision: for now, the standard deviation is less than six years.

  • Generation Z: Who Are They?

    We don’t know much about Generation Z, since they are those born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s and now they are just graduating from college and entering the workforce. But these young people differ in many significant ways from their predecessors. Ksenia Pomogaeva, a first year Master’s student at ITMO University, conducted a research on Gen Z to find out the factors influencing their career choices and ways to motivate this new cohort of workers.   • ITMO Scientists' Collaboration with German and Swiss Colleagues Wins ERA.Net Research Grant

    A team of scientists from ITMO’s International Research and Education Center for Physics of Nanostructures, together with their colleagues from the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Germany) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland), have been awarded a grant by the European initiative ERA.Net RUS Plus. Their three-year project concerns the modeling and design of new functional nanomaterials with potential applications in biomedicine and diagnostics. As the researchers note, nanomaterials based on ternary quantum dots can be used to create a sensor platform with unprecedented filtering and sensitivity capabilities for the purpose of multiplexed single-cell pathogen analysis. In the future, results of this research can contribute to the development of more precise and compact devices used for fluorescence analysis of nanostructures.

  • Eleven ITMO Scientists Receive Presidential Scholarships

    The Russian Ministry of Education and Science, along with the Presidential Grant Council, have announced the results of the open competition for presidential scholarships. These scholarships are provided to young scientists and postgraduate students who work on R&D in top-priority areas vital to the modernization of the Russian economy in 2018-2020. More than 2,000 applications were made; among 575 scholarship winners, 11 came from ITMO University.

  • Scientists Propose New Type Of Terahertz Solid-State Laser

    A team of scientists from ITMO and Vladimir State University have proposed a new type of a solid-state terahertz laser. According to their research, such laser will be more efficient compared to existing devices, as well as allow stepless frequency tuning. In future, the proposed model which is based on the use of gallium-nitride quantum dots can lay the groundwork to creating a compact solid-state source of terahertz radiation that can be effectively applied in medicine, security systems, and other fields. The results were first published in ACS Photonics journal, and a separate review of the research was included in Nature’s “News and Views”.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop New “White” Near-Field Optical Microscope

    Scientists from ITMO University have proven that a silicon-gold nanoparticle can act as an effective source of white light when agitated by a pulse laser in IR band. One such “nanobulb” was integrated into a standard probe microscope, which allowed the researchers to overcome the diffraction limit and examine subwavelength-size objects. What is more, it made it possible to study the optical response of nanoobjects on the entire visual band, and not just in particular wavelengths. Not only will the new technology make modern near-field microscopy cheaper and simpler, but it also can find use in medicine. The scientists are currently patenting their invention, while its description has recently been published in the prestigious Nano Letters journal.

  • ITMO Physicists Use Radiofrequency Trap to “Freeze” Nanocrystals

    A group of physicists from ITMO University has developed a system that provides optical cooling to nanocrystals. The system, made up of a radiofrequency trap and a laser light source, decreases the kinetic energy of a nanocrystal and lowers it to its quantum limit, at which new properties emerge. This method may prove useful in fundamental research and studies of biological objects within the framework of quantum mechanics. A research paper was published in the Journal of the Optical Society of America B as an editors’ pick.

  • ITMO’s Academic Council Wraps Up 2017

    This year’s final meeting of ITMO University’s Academic Council took place on 26 December. The university’s R&D results were presented by ITMO’s Vice Rector for Research, Vladimir Nikiforov, while the university’s new educational standards were presented by the First Vice Rector, Daria Kozlova.

  • Scientists Launched a New Method for Microscopy of Nanoobjects

    Scientists have managed to measure the electromechanical properties of nanotubes a thousand times thinner than a human hair. For that, they modified an existing method of the atomic force microscopy so that the scanning probe does not damage nanotubes while moving along a sample surface. The modification helped to study peptide nanotubes loosely attached to a substrate. This technique may prove useful for designing new biocompatible materials and compact devices. The results are published in the latest issue of Ultramicroscopy.
