• Russian and Dutch Researchers on What’s Holding Back a Revolution in Data Storage

  Almost all of us store data on cloud services and use social networks. Some know that servers hosting that data occupy whole buildings and require significant resources to maintain. The world’s best researchers are at work trying to make data hosting more affordable, secure and user-friendly, but no revolutionizing changes have happened so far. Recently, Alexandra Kalashnikova, a physicist at the Ioffe Institute and ITMO University, along with colleagues from Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands) and the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences have published a paper in Physics Reports. In the article, researchers explain why the industry hasn’t yet begun recording data on HDDs with lasers, or dropped disk drives altogether. Alexandra told ITMO.NEWS more about the paper.

• Scientists Propose a Carbon Dot-Based Method for Increasing the Efficiency of Solar Cells and LED

  An international group of scientists, including some from ITMO University, has proposed a method that allows for significantly increasing the efficiency of solar cells and light-emitting diodes. The scientists managed to achieve this result by augmenting the auxiliary layers of the devices responsible for electron transport rather than working with the main active layer. The work has been published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

• ITMO University Organizes an Exam for a World Maritime University Student

  Sofiia Zarubenko is a PhD student at two universities: World Maritime University, Sweden (responsible for academic curriculum) and Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, UK (responsible for administering the learning process). The study process is based on distance learning, except for the exams that should be taken in London. However, this year, the Academy’s students from all over the world had to find a way to take the exam despite the quarantine. ITMO University helped Sofiia to solve this problem by organizing an exam for the foreign university.

• At the Intersection of Biology, Chemistry, and IT: New Participants of ITMO Fellowship & Professorship Program on Their Research at ITMO

  How to make scientists, constantly cooped up in their laboratories, communicate more and find new points of contact for joint work at the intersection of several fields of knowledge? This question is especially topical for those who work on fixed-term contracts or as part of an exchange and are thus especially intent on spending all their time on work. It is for supporting communication between different scientists coming to ITMO that the university’s Internationalization Department organizes meetups for participants of the ITMO Fellowship & Professorship program. • Students of Three European Universities Visit Russia to Study Closed-Loop Economy on the Example of St. Petersburg Companies

  CREA-RE-RU is a joint project by ITMO University, University of Gävle (Sweden), Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Finland), and University of Latvia. For two years now, the project’s participants have been solving real-life business cases provided by production plants and companies by developing effective schemes for utilizing natural resources. The project is divided into four study sessions: each semester, the participants are welcomed by a different partner university. ITMO University became the final venue, hosting the international students on February 17-21.

• Russian Participants of European XFEL Observe and Document Never-Before-Seen Effect

  A team of ITMO University specialists and their German colleagues have successfully used the world’s largest free-electron X-ray laser to conduct an experiment on ultrafast demagnetization of ferromagnetic material using femtosecond IR excitation. While studying the dynamics of this process, the scientists had discovered a new type of X-ray scattering in ferromagnetic material, which occurs immediately after the laser pulse and lasts for some 100 picoseconds. Their findings were recently presented at the European XFEL Users’ Meeting in Hamburg, which brought together over 1,300 participants from 30 countries. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with Igor Pronin, the head of this project, who presented a plenary report on the study during the event.

• University of the Future: Russian and British University Officials Discuss Trends in Education

  This Thursday, ITMO University hosted a meeting of university officials from the UK and St. Petersburg, a follow-up to the First Forum of Rectors of Russian and British Universities that was held in Moscow. The key event of the day was a round table discussion on universities of the future. The participants talked about the best educational practices and ways to attract talent while discussing possible collaboration in the field of student academic mobility.

  ITMO University professor Vladimir Dubrovskii has recently been awarded one of the French Republic’s highest honors in the field of science and education. • How Russian and French Researchers are Helping to Restore Classic Art

  Terahertz radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation located within the frequency spectrum between infrared and radio. It passes well through a variety of materials and is harmless to humans, which opens up a wide range of its possible applications. Researchers at ITMO University are actively working on this subject in collaboration with their French colleagues. Together, the scientists are developing a pulsed terahertz spectrometer for application in the analysis and restoration of artworks.
