  • BBC Expert: How to Make Science More Accessible

    Julian Siddle, a BBC science journalist and the producer for BBC World Service and BBC Radio, has given a series of talks at Central Exhibition Hall Manege and ITMO University as part of the UK-Russia Year of Science and Education 2017. Speaking to the audience, he discussed the ways to explain gravity waves to children, why major discoveries often begin with the simplest questions and whether scientific content can compete with the social media’s top vloggers.

  • How to Make the Perfect User Interface

    A good user interface takes into account human flaws, minimizes mistakes and users’ irritation. But how do you create a coherent interface? Why is it so important to know about user experience design and what should one learn to create software that would “speak” to its users? We spoke to Andrey Balkansky, senior lecturer at ITMO’s Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics, who recently completed the “User Interface and Information Representation” course at Artem Gorbunov’s Design Bureau in Moscow. The course was conducted by renowned Russian designer Ilya Birman.

  • Semester Abroad in Russia: Lifetime of Memories

    Study abroad is one of the most rewarding experiences in the life of a young person. You get to learn about a different culture, open your mind to a new reality, and get to know yourself in an entirely new way. I never took the opportunity to participate in an international exchange program in university, but I took a gap year after high school which I spent travelling and volunteering, and that experience set the tone for the rest of my life. With another semester starting at ITMO, we’re going to share with you some of the experiences of last semester’s exchange students!

  • Algorithm Summer School: New ITMO-STC Initiative

    From August 14 to 25, ITMO hosted the first Algorithm summer school on machine learning, organized in collaboration with the STC (Speech Technology Center) IT company. Any technical student, starting with third years', as well as young scientists and specialists could participate in the school; all one had to do is pass the entrance competition.   • Bloomberg Experts: Semantic Tech to Improve Financial Operations

    Today, executing financial operations often requires the use of identifiers to clearly specify the different financial instruments used - such as equities, bonds, options and so on. But these IDs may be different in various organizations and countries, which can lead to mistakes and slowing down financial operations. At the recent Digital Transformation & Global Society Conference hosted by ITMO University, the Bloomberg experts Richard  Beatch  and Inessa Collier, as well as Dr. Yuri Lipuntsov, Associate Professor at the Moscow State University, spoke about new standards of identification of financial instruments and how they can help solve such problems.

  • "In English, Please": De-Jargonizer Helps Make Science Accessible

    Israeli scientists have developed software that can analyze a scientific article’s level of comprehensibility. The algorithm, named De-Jargonizer, separates words into three categories according to their frequency of use and, using a simple formula, determines how accessible the text will be to a wider audience. Having tested their software on articles from PLOS ONE, the scientists learned that the abstracts of some articles can consist of rare scientific terms by up to 27 percent. Developers hope that their program will help adapt texts to be more accessible to a majority of people.

  • Ecological Raids: International Ecocamp at Yagodnoe

    The international volunteer camp Ecological Raids was held at ITMO University’s health-and-sports center Yagodnoe. For two weeks students from 12 countries attended talks and workshops on social and ecological projects, came up with ideas for Ecohouses and got to know more about Russian culture. All of this happened on the shores of a beautiful lake in the Karelian isthmus.

  • DemoDay: Projects from MIT Global Startup Labs and SumIT Startup School

    The SumIT Startup School and the MIT Global Startup Labs acceleration programs have both come to a close at ITMO University. Young entrepreneurs from Russia and South Korea have received feedback from an expert board of staff from MIT and ITMO University’s business incubator. Their ideas were presented to potential investors during the DemoDay closing event on August 10.
