  • ITMO University Secures First Place in Science Popularisation Ranking

    Indicator, a popular science website, has recently published its science popularisation ranking. It has evaluated the effectiveness of PR activities of universities participating in Project 5-100 in 2017. The results were based on a questionnaire survey filled in by staff members of the universities’ PR-departments. ITMO topped the ranking, receiving 193 points out of 195 possible. Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (192 points) and National University of Science and Technology came second and third in the ranking, accordingly (187).

  • ITMO has the Best Science Communicators in Russia

    The team of science communicators from ITMO University won the Grand Prix of the first professional award in the field of science communication in Russia “Communication Laboratory”. The Russian Venture Company together with the Association of Communicators in Education and Science (AKSON) have held the competition since 2017. Specialists in the field of communications as well as teams from universities that use the best techniques in popularising science and creating a dialogue between scientists and the public can win the award.

  • Gut Microbiome Showed Positive Response to High-Fiber Diet in Two Weeks

    The research team from ITMO University, NSU, MIPT, “Atlas Biomed Group” and “Knomics” company analyzed the impact of short-term changes in diet on the condition of the gut microbiome. Assessing changes in the microbiome structure of 248 volunteers, the researchers concluded that diet enriched with food fiber significantly changes the balance of gut bacterial species in two weeks. Obtained results will be used for a personal dietary recommendation system. This will be helpful for both healthy people and those who suffer from metabolic disorders and run the risk of atherosclerosis or diabetes. The study is published in Nutrients.

  • Science Communication Research from American Journalists

    Mark Harris and Wayt Gibbs are American science journalists and graduates of the prestigious MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship program who are currently conducting a media tour around various Russian research centers. During their visit to ITMO University, they held an open lecture for Science Communication Master’s students, during which they answered the students’ questions and shared their perception of science journalism.

  • How Citizen Science Helps in “True” Research

    How can snapshots of the night sky develop science? Why are professional scientists always looking for birdwatchers and amateur naturalists? How can people without a degree discover planets and co-author research articles? Julia Lorke, a specialist in science communication, researcher at the London Museum of Natural History, gave answers to these and many more questions about citizen science in an open lecture at ITMO University, that was organized by the Science Communication Office.

  • Eco-Friendly Board Game Teaches Students to Combine Business and Sustainable Development

    Master’s students from ITMO University learned about sustainable development at a workshop on the board game Ecologic. Sustainable development is the concept of balance between humanity’s ecological, economic and social goals. This kind of balance is what Ecologic aims to inspire people to strive towards.   • Science Communication at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

    Alexandra Borisova from ITMO’s Science Communication and Outreach Office spent a year in Germany at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, one of Europe’s leading science communication centers. She was awarded a German Chancellor Fellowship (the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation) that allowed her to work on her research project on science communication in Russia.   • Russia to Launch First Educational Media-Project on Cancer Prevention

    Cancer prevention foundation “Ne naprasno” (its name translates as "Not in vain" from Russian - Ed.) won a Presidential grant for creating Profilaktika.Media - an educational media project on evidence-based medicine and oncology. Two Master’s students of ITMO’s Science Communication Program are responsible for this project: Ksenia Zhirnova and Elizaveta Dubovik. ITMO.NEWS spoke with these students and found out what it's all about: namely, what is cancer prevention; why there are still so many misconceptions about cancer in Russia; how such a media project could help cancer patients, as well as improve doctors’ training.

  • ITMO Tops Science Popularisation Ranking

    Indicator, a popular science site, has recently come up with a science popularisation ranking. It has evaluated effectiveness of PR activities of universities participating in Project 5-100 in the first half of 2017. The results were based on a questionnaire developed by Indicator, which was filled out by staff members of the universities’ PR-departments. ITMO topped this ranking, receiving 36 points out of 39 possible. Tomsk Polytechnic University (35 points), Higher School of Economics (35 points) and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (34 points) came second and third in the ranking, accordingly.

  • WCSJ-2017: Making Science More Popular Than Politics

    The 10th World Conference of Science Journalists, the world’s biggest event in the field of science communication and journalism, took place on October 26-30 in San Francisco. The next conference will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2019. ITMO University and the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON) plan to conduct a pre-conference press-tour to Russia for foreign science journalists. Head of ITMO’s Center for Science Communication Dmitry Malkov has told us why such events are needed to develop science communication and journalism in Russia.
