  • ITMO's First Game Development Graduates on Russian GameDev and Their Careers

    Three years ago, the Master’s program in Game Development Technologies was launched at ITMO University. There are two specializations: Game Design and In-Game Technologies, which includes game engine development and artificial intelligence programming. During their studies, students of this program participated in creating applications for the 2019 Minsk European Games and WorldSkills Kazan 2019. Now, they work at major game development companies. We asked the first graduates to tell us about their career paths, and experience they gained at the university.

  • “I Did It Because I Could”: ITMO Alumnus Donates 800 Respirators to St. Petersburg Hospital, Buys Laptops for School Students

    In early April, the coronavirus epidemic caused schools in St. Petersburg to adopt a distance learning format. It became clear then that some 17,000 school students had no access to devices that would let them continue studying from home. Maksim Gavrilov, an ITMO University graduate, responded to the call to help students from low-income families by purchasing 54 computers. Before that, he donated over 800 respirators to the St. Petersburg Hospital №2. His own explanation is simply that he could help. We got in touch with Maksim for a chat about solidarity in times of the pandemic, his times at ITMO, his business, and how to maintain a proper workday in self-isolation.

  • ITMO University Graduates Become Forbes 30 Under 30 Nominees

    Forbes Russia has released its second annual 30 Under 30 ranking. According to the authors, to get a mention in the list, by the age of 30 you need to have earned professional acclaim nationally or even globally. This year, two ITMO University graduates are among the nominees – Greg Tkachenko, co-founder of the startup AI Factory and manager at Snap, and Daniel Galper, founder and CEO of Grow Food.

  • ITMO University PhD student Karina Pats on Her Job in the Field of Bioinformatics in Kazakhstan and her Career in Academia

    Karina Pats graduated from ITMO University’s Applied Computer Science program last year, and at the moment is getting a PhD degree. She also works on a big project at Nazarbayev University (Kazakhstan) under the grant for research of nuclear receptor action mechanisms. Karina shared with ITMO.NEWS why research of these mechanisms can potentially help development of a new medicine, how bioinformatics work in Kazakhstan, and why she decided to pursue a career in academia instead of the industry.

  • ITMO Graduate and Serokell Co-Founder Arseniy Seroka on Science, Haskell and Working Out of Office

    In 2015, ITMO University alum Arseniy Seroka and his Riga-based colleague Jonn Mostovoy founded a company that has now grown to 60 people. The team doesn’t have an office, rigid working hours or a dress code – today, Serokell is powered by specialists from different parts of the world, living in different timezones. Such an unconventional structure doesn’t hinder the company from growth and development, supporting ITMO’s international “Computer Technologies” laboratory, and leading research projects at the university. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Arseniy shares about why it’s important for an IT company to help young scientists, how Serokell is writing a book about their unique collaboration format, and why you shouldn’t take the easy route if you dream about a successful career in IT.

  • Education Helps You Understand Things, Science Communication – to Explain Them: An Interview with ITMO University Graduate Daniil Shirokov

    Daniil Shirokov is one of the first graduates of the Science Communication program at ITMO University. By the time he started his Master’s studies, he already had a Bachelor’s degree in biophysics. Now, Daniil works as a science communicator at one of the biggest private clinics in St. Petersburg while writing a thesis on philosophy.   • ITMO Grad and AI Factory Co-Founder Greg Tkachenko: Startups Are the Cure for Burnout

    Greg Tkachenko graduated with a Master's degree from ITMO University's Information Technologies and Programming Faculty in 2017, but he achieved his first professional successes while still a student. As a second-year student, Greg, along with a few other students of the Computer Technologies Department, was invited to take part in an internship at Yandex, where he spent almost two and a half years. Then, he received offers from Mail.ru Group and Facebook, which he turned down to work on the startup AI Factory, which he co-founded with Alexander Mashrabov and Victor Shaburov. In December 2019, the company was acquired by Snapchat’s parent company Snap for $166 million. Greg Tkachenko sat down for a chat with ITMO.NEWS and told us where to find ideas for your tech startup and how to deal with failure.

    Daniil Sharov received his Bachelor’s degree as a teacher of physics, but decided to continue his studies after graduation and got into ITMO’s Master’s program in science communication.
